I told you it was dirty:

Here you can see just how crud-encrusted the filter was. Good job filter!

IMG_2212.jpg

You can see that my factory-provided filter is the same height as the Purolator filter:

Here you can see inside the bottom of the air box. I spent some time cleaning the grime and dirt out using paper towels with degreaser sprayed on them (not into the air box). I thought I could use my shop vac but it wouldn't have been effective so I resorted to hand labor):

IMG_2215.jpg

And here's the underside of the air box cover. Not much cleaning was required - most all the dirt and grime will be in the lower air box housing. You can see the tabs (on the left side) of the air box cover in this pic. The tabs are inserted into the right side of the lower air box housing which secures the right side of the cover. The left side is secured by the three spring clips.

I got a surprise "gift" when I was removing the air box cover. I saw something in the space to the right of the air box cover. Once I removed the air box cover I could use my fingers to pick it out of the space. I'm guessing my Ford dealer's mechanic left me a "present" of this black screw cap (screwdriver shown for scale :) ). Anyone recognize this cap? I'm wondering if it's an oil container cap...

Pics or it didn't happen Coyoteman.

Somehow it happened :D

Just changed mine for the first time (5750 miles). It was pretty clean before the Mojave Road. Look at it now

****, I guess I will be doing this again.

Yup, my almost new filter replacement from the original post in this thread is filthy. It was brand new prior to the Mojave Road trip.

Going to replace it again this weekend along with both diff fluids and transfer case.

Guys, check out these pics.

This was the brand new filter I fitted earlier in the forum thread above.

Check it out after just using the truck for three days during the Mojave Road trip.

Yes, it's THAT BAD!

I replaced it with another brand new filter this weekend.

Guys who went on the trip, please check your filters ASAP!!

Thanks xjr....I think I need to buy a case of air filters!

How did you make out on the diff and transfer case fluid changes? Find any water?

Haha, it might be worth it.

I am actually wondering how Brian's K & N is doing.

Did not do the transfer case and diffs flush today.

Reason: Laziness and also debating whether or not to install Mag Hytec covers to replace the 8.8 cover in the front and 9.75 cover in the rear.

Pluses:

They have ports for temp gauges
Both have dipsticks
Both have drain plugs (no need to remove entire cover and reseal at each diff flush
They are in Van Nuys, CA so close by

Minuses

Pricey
Clearance issues (front diff cover?) - might be mitigated by bringing Raptor to their shop to check it out.

I will change mine again this week. I haven't checked it after the Mojave Road trip but I suspect it'll be bad.

This might be time for our first Group Buy! Case(s) of air filters.

We know the Purolator Air Filter number is A35642.

Do we know what the model numbers are for other makes like Fram, STP, etc?

Here's some online pricing info - we need to see where we can get the best price for a quantity:

This one's $13.99
