it seems crazy that they wouldn't just update it to the metal pan with proper provisions. I am lucky enough to have a metal pan but when I first read about this issue it boggles my mind to think Ford wouldn't put the latest and greatest improvements and take care of this once and for all.

Well as you know it all comes down to $$$- and you’re not wrong to question the mentality.

The answer? Clearly not nearly enough composite pans are failing enough to justify the nominal expense of replacing it- ford did the math & based on # of incidents & unhappy customers it still makes more sense financially for them to weather the warranty issues & move forward.

Of course you’re in an online truck forum, so you’ll get the impression leaking oil pans is a super common problem like 75% of raptors suffer from.

I am on my third pan....with multiple other problems....If I didn't like how the truck looked so much it would have been gone a long time ago.....latest is the need for new sway bar links....backordered until end of June...

I did receive and extended warranty because of all my issues.....

I agree that an online forum tends to exaggerate the number of trucks suffering from this. BUT let's look at it from a diff perspective. We all agree that the potential exist that a plastic oil pan in the F150 will fail. SO would you buy a F150 with a plastic oil pan knowing what you know now? I would NOT buy a F150 with a plastic oil pan.

Think of all the poor souls who are not on this forum and is considering a used F150 that has a plastic oil pan. And then buy them out of warranty. ;(

Even more to the point, if Ford offered a free options of getting a cast aluminum pan, a steel plan or a plastic pan when ordering the truck- what would people choose? I'd go aluminum 100% of the time.

Given there are multiple people in this thread alone posting they've had at least 3 pans on a truck that can be no more then 3 years old- that tells me it's not the RTV that is the root issue. Throw in the fact Ford no longer uses a plastic pan really makes it clear that it was a bad design. There's no way they switched to metal pans to save money. More like they did it to save face on their flagship engine.

I have a 2017 ford raptor. Has anyone had as many oil pan replacements as me?

Wondering if anyone under the sun has had the metal oil pan retrofitted through ford?

Also I know of a few people that had their engines replaced. But I’m thinking a new oem engine with new oil plan wouldn’t happen either but I guess I can dream.

Ford corporate is being brought on this newest oil pan replacement. I’ll report back what happens. I’m just trying to see if anyone else has had large sums of oil pan replacements done (3+ pans).
Wow!! Who is changing the oil pans? Is it “Jiffy Lube”? That shows very, very poor technical and/or mechanical skills!! What dealer/service department is this?? I had mine replaced at 7,500 miles (first oil change) and now at 48k miles it is drier than beach sand in a hot summer day!! You need a new dealer with a service department that has certified techs and that are able to read the “2017 Ford F-150 Workshop Manual” and properly follow the instructions on how to install an oil pan!! Nothing to do with whether the oil pan is made out of plastic, composite material, aluminum or whatever!!

Honestly, out of warranty wouldnt be that bad.

Each time the pan failed I went in, they didnt have it and had to order it, left, went back again to drop it off, then left, then went back to pick it up, then left. Also, the first time they dumped out my synthetic and dumped in regular.

So, under warranty I can make like 12 trips to the dealer for 2 plastic oil pans and lost like $60 worth of royal purple.

Out of warranty I would have bought a emtal pan and oil pick up, possibly aftermarket/better than stock for like $300, fixed it in 2 hours and been done with it.

How is warranty that much better?

i tend to agree with df4801

yes, you may have had a defect originally, and that repair was botched. composite oil pans have been a thing with multiple manufacturers for 10 years now.

I tend to agree with reality. There’s a reason Ford ditched the composite pan half way through 2018 life cycle and it certainly wasn’t because it works perfectly fine.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. With that said, the are many many more Raptor owners with dry pans than leaking pans. I know that is no consolation, as when ones vehicle is down it sux.

Sam

Many more passengers who survived 737 Max flights than those who didn’t. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t a design flaw.

I'm only repeating what someone else wrote here, but they said a cross member is in the way and the engine needs to be pulled to replace the oil pan. If that's true, it is a fairly pricy repair to pay for out of pocket.

I'm confused, am I insecure because my oil pan doesn't leak, or because I take my off-road truck off-road?

No, you’re insecure because you can’t take fair and perfectly reasonable criticism of the truck. Heck you come into threads guns blazing when there’s talk of a potentially better truck coming.
