Hey guys so it finally happened the raptor turned 100k this past weekend. I am planning to do spark plugs and then fluids starting at the transfer case an then start my way towards the rear diff. Looking for any other 100k issues I can get ahead of if at all possible.? Wish I had the budget to do all fluids Etc..... at once but that’s an easy $1200 alone. I also wanted to see if anyone has done there own plugs ...? I have asked a few friends and shop owners and they all laugh and say oh your gonna change plugs don’t snap them ..... crap! I’ve heard to do plugs warm and also was suggested to use an impact...? I’ve changed plugs on many vehicles with zero issues other then cramped spaces this one however has me on edge don’t want a snapped plug..! Thanks in advance also plan to use all motor craft parts and amsoil or royal purple for fluids unless other suggestions....? Thanks

Were you farming out all of the work or doing it yourself ? The front diff service and sparkplugs are the only ones that might be a "little" on the tricky side. There are plenty of posts/notes about each of the above jobs in past threads if you want to search around on the message board for some "how-to" guides.

The transfer case drain/fill is stupid easy - can use "FordTechMakuloco 's " how-to from Youtube as a guide (his other vids are quite helpful for Ford owners/techs btw):



The rear diff fluid drain/fill is almost as easy (slap on an aftermarket rear diff cover that has drain and fill holes for ease of future fluid changes while you are at it - they tend to cost around $200, probably a few bucks less during upcoming black friday sales). If you are truly on a budget you can re-seal the rear diff with the factory cover.

I've used Valvoline's transfer case fluid ( https://www.valvoline.com/our-produ...on-products/multi-vehicle-transfer-case-fluid ) with zero issues as well as their gear oil (75w-140) in the rear diff ( https://www.valvoline.com/our-products/grease-gear-oil/synpower-full-synthetic-gear-oil ). Have also used Mobil 1 (75w-140) gear oil ( https://mobiloil.com/en/gear-lubricants/mobil-1-synthetic-gear-lube-ls ).

Use whatever floats your boat - YMMV !

This is not a 5.4L 3V engine with 2 piece spark plugs we are talking about. It has standard spark plugs. There's no chance that they break.

If you drop the pan to do the trans fluid, you can put on the Dorman pan with a drain plug for next time.

You could also just buy a drain plug kit and drill your OEM pan.

If you are going for an aftermarket rear diff cover, watch the Banks videos on Youtube about them. I'd just keep the stock cover. Clean it all up really good and seal it up with The Right Stuff RTV. Torque it down to about 80% of the rated torque and let it dry overnight. The next day, torque it the rest of the way and fill it up. Guaranteed no leaks that way.

$1200 seems really high for fluids. I guess if you used top of the line Amsoil in everything- maybe? I'd think you can get full synthetics for the engine, trans, front and rear diffs, plus the transfer case for well under $500. Coolant would be the only fluid left aside from brake fluid, and it's maybe $50 tops for two gallons.

If you are going to flush the brake system, I like the ATE 200 stuff. High end stuff and not very expensive.

I've been reading up on the "Plug Change" for months and from what I've heard,its doable if you know your way around a tool-box...hard and a PITA for a couple of the lower ones,but doable...I'm planning on doing mine in the spring and the 2 item below were highly recommended,so I picked up for around $75,which is well worth it...
Were you at in WA....?? I'll do your uppers if you do my lowers...;)

False many people on this forum have had the plugs snap during the swap.

Show me one. I've not seen it in over two years here.

Are you talking about the porcelain snapping off? If so, that means nothing. The metal threaded part that is screwed into the head will still come out, and the new plug will go back in.

Or are you saying the solid metal portion that is threaded into the head "snaps"? If so, I'm not buying that. The 6.2L engine uses a standard plug. There's nothing unique about a 6.2L engine that would cause the threaded steel base to just snap for no reason. I know one of my friends will **** up pretty much anything he touches on an engine, so maybe it's just those types trying to do their own plugs?

Ricoman haha we have spoke before I'm up near Canadian border Bellingham area an already purchased the sockets and ratchet. Still plan to use buddies 2 post lift to have easier access to plugs in back etc. I was just recently talking with a customer of mine ( he works at the Ford stealer service dept) he also mentioned the raptor and 6.2 were only time he ever snapped plug. Few days later spoke to another customer who owns local speed shop for high HP builds he also said they have snapped 1or2 on raptors that's when he mentioned using the impact on a warm motor.....? Talking to them made me hesitate on the job fluids other then front diff I planned to do what's suggested replace/upgrade trans pan and rear diff cover soon an do fluid change then.

The porcelain part yes and obviously the threaded part will still come out. Just saying people like your friend may have problems. You or I no, but @RDFTS his son ****** it up and Ford had to get em out recently.
