Lots of good stuff going on at Full-Race. Engine startup was uneventful. I love seeing the oem 5 link and gen 3 front suspension geometry under the gen 2
Still have a bunch of work to do before she drives. Will make another post with details and photos in a couple days
Friday afternoon update:
Gen 3 front suspension is loosely in
Front diff has a brace on the top mount and raptor R bushings installed
along with the about-to-be trimmed B&M front diff cover
2024+ raptor R axles, with the rcv iwe delete. Supposedly the RL3V axles are stronger...
MSRP is $2300: https://parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/transmission/powertrain-engine-parts/automatic-transmission-from-07-26-21-35l-%28performance-ssv-at%29-p-rl3z7000h?pdp=y
And if you search the part number it is generally selling it for $1930
Example...
Time to get busy. This is where things currently sit:
Front suspension and driveline are up next. That will kick off my 3-day thrash starting Thursday. I’m optimistically hoping to get the truck running by EOD Saturday.
Rear susp needs a brake bleed and finish off the rear exhaust (maybe...
Oem gen 3 gasket. Great head gasket, and it should have been in your engine the entire time, would have been a different animal entirely.
Im sorry you had to go through all that insane levels of frustration. Glad you did not throw in the towel
big thanks to @dillard09 for sharing the photos of his failed ‘built’ engine with me. An accomplished machinist spotted the issue
“Take a look at picture #2 you can see where the aftermarket head gasket appears to have literally jacked up the head. This is something builders have to be...
I think the machine shop can probably supply that stuff for you. no need to order yourself unless you have a compelling reason
After doing this stuff full time for 23 years, its rarely easy and not always fun in the moment. whenever youre feeling overwhelm it's best to take a step back and...
This brings up a decision you'll need to make pretty soon. Headgames works closely with big name Coyote 5.0L builders and legacy Ford tuners... Those guys are obviously all in on the SCT/HPT platform due to the plethora of controls and accessible tables. There is no doubt this is a more...
FYI - biggest discount I’ve ever seen on boostline rods direct from the mfg
https://www.boostlineproducts.com/product/connecting-rod-kits/connecting-rod-kits-domestic/ford-3-5l-3-7l-ecoboost-v6-6-012-in-length-connecting-rod-set/
take a super close look with a magnifying glass to confirm- it’s always on the driver side and difficult to see yet always in the same spot along the perimeter of the PCV tumor - timing chain zone
the gen 3 uses a higher pressure DI system for improved high speed combustion. it also features lifters, rockers and phasers that function as intended. and metal timing chain guides + tensioners that do not flex or break. it is a superior engine.
that has not been my experience
I sincerely appreciate your sharing this build with everyone, and love your sense of urgency! to keep progress moving I called an old industry friend this morning, expert machinist with strong 3.5L ecoboost experience ( I don't know why I didn't think of him earlier). He provides some of the...
more restrictive oem cats combined with smaller turbos on gen 3 vs higher flowing cats, bigger turbos on gen 2
same same. thats why im swapping gen 3 guts into my aging gen 2!
So sorry to hear about this crash… I can’t imagine what that’s like. Thank goodness she is doing ok
I think we’re both allergic to trucks being out of commission. At the moment our builds are probably on opposite ends of the engine spectrum. Im thrashing through a frame swap first and...
compared to gen 2...
gen 3 engine is improved internally. stronger crankshaft, metal timing chain guides, metal mounting tabs, better lifters/rockers (all can swap over to gen 3)
gen 3 transmission much better than gen 2, and only $1900
gen 3 front suspension better geometry, stronger ball...
Sorry I did not do this yet (been focused on bronco raptor/ranger raptor 3.0 and 2.7 Ecoboost). Right now parts are piling up, and I need a solid 2 day wrench-fest to get things in a good place, hopefully early March
The ford system shows the part as fitting 2022-2025 f150 soo I’d be surprised...
Weak point on an gen 3 block after valvetrain and oil pump are addressed is the rod/ piston.
JE pistons and boostline rods is the high end solve. No need for total seal rings imo.
The next step beyond that is using ductile iron sleeves. This is big work and tricky machining to avoid head...
