Ok guys, I think I've got a general idea of what it looks like but could y'all please explain what it is and how it's caused. Also please include your tire brand/model and some pics.

Chunking is when pieces or "chunks" break off of your tread blocks. It is usually caused by agressive or abusive driving, on or off road. This seems to occur more in mud terrain tires. Sometimes happens to all terrain tires as well. Large tread blocks and softer tire compounds seem to contribute to the problem. I had it happen to a brand new set of Toyo MT tires during spirited off road driving. If the chunking is severe enough, it can destroy the tire, but usually it is just cosmetic damage and the tire can continue service.

So being that the m/t's seem to chunk more than a/t's would it be safe to say that the taller and bigger the tread block, the more likely that they will chunk easier?

There seem to be a lot of variables that cause chunking to occur. Size of the tread block is certainly one of them. I think the composition of the tread compound is another big one. Style of driving and type of terrain, design of the tread blocks, direction and amount of siping, tire pressure, weight of vehicle, etc, etc, etc.

It's usually from rocky terrain and the wheels spinning on the rocks. Happened to me a little bit at the TRR. Putting the truck into 4wd and taking the steep rock climbs slower will almost eliminate any issues.

It's not that simple. All other things being equal, yes.

But my Toyo MT's wear like iron. 20K miles, 3 Raptor Runs, and no bad chunking.

Whereas my stock BFG AT's were ruined after one Raptor Run.

My Toyo MT rears are chunked to hell. Perf 93 tune insane throttle response meant I was spinning my rears too much. I am going to rotate them to be my spares
