You can buy anything with crypto. If it's not a direct wallet to wallet tranaction- there will have to be an intermediate that does the conversion, but it's no different than paying an overseas seller on Ebay for instance. In that case, the dollars get converted to whatever the overseas seller wants it in, and you pay a fee for that.

Same deal. There are services that will convert crypto into dollars for the purchase. Fees are high for a small purchase though, it's not a fixed %- so you won't be using a conversion service to buy a taco.

I'd sell my Gen 1 for 0.82 BTC.

I'm not apposed to the idea of crypto but just need more places to accept it before it becomes a serious consideration, like taxes, mortgage payments and utilities. Genuinely curious if anyone has made major purchases using the stuff from established retailers and not some rando on the net.

100% yes. Where I used to work,Overstock.com (now Bed Bath and Beyond), we started accepting Bitcoin for payments back in 2014 (first major retailer to accept it) and were doing hundreds of thousands of dollars a day in btc transactions. We later added more altcoins as well. I haven't worked there in several years and it sounds like they no longer accept it.
