Wow! Can car salesmen really be this bad?

So I am coming home yesterday and I see a nice Classic Mustang not far behind me. I turn into my neighborhood and he is still behind me. He ends up following me to my house, gets out and introduces himself. He is in a beautiful 1970 Mustang. He tells me that he is getting a Raptor tomorrow and wanted to ask me about mine. After talking a bit he tells me that he is trading in the Mustang on the Raptor. He tells me that the Raptor has just over 100k miles on it and the price is 35k. I ask him what year and he tells me 2007!! When I told him there was no such thing he looked a bit shocked. He said it had the wide fenders and Raptor graphics on the side. I asked him if he was sure on the year and he said he was positive.

He said it had dual shocks on the rear but did not have Fox in the front. He is going back today as scheduled but said he will not be taking the Mustang with him. I told him to play along like he didn't know and see if the salesman told him it was a 'Real' Raptor and not a clone and tries to go through with the sale. I hope he let's me know the outcome. He was pretty upset when he left.

Its either one of two things. The salesman is naive or lying to make a sale.

I would hope it be the first but my gut tells me its the second, just because of being a car salesman. You need to always be more educated on the deal from the car purchased, the trade and finances. Look at the salesman as the person to facilitate just paperwork and nothing more.

I'd heard almost the exact same story from one of the guys at America's Tire. While I was in getting my new Duratracs put on, he told me he had thought about buying a 2006 Raptor for twenty grand. When I told him the Raptor first debuted in '09, he got all indignant. He was adamant that the truck he was going to buy was an "early" Raptor. It didn't have the Ford grill, but it had wide fenders, 20 inch wheels, lights, and stickers.

Shady car salesmen aside, some people are just that gullible, and can be taken for a ride even in a private purchase. Be an informed buyer, or you're going to get hosed.

I agree. I was in the muscle car business for 10 years and would frequently have to tell people that the SS, Z28, Cuda, Road Runner, etc. were clones and not the real thing. But they got taken advantage of. What a shame.

yep. shame on the salesman for being a shady SOB but all the blame cant be on them when the buyer cant do little research to make sure he is getting the real deal.

I've got a '70 Super Bee 440 6-Pack, 4-Speed. It was originally a 383 Magnum Auto Trans. car. The 383 was tired, I still have it and the Auto, and I love it. Unless someone asks I don't advertise it as a clone but I couldn't love a true 440 6-Pack any more, unless I was trying to sell it, LOL. If you're buying muscle cars, be wary. Even the really sharp guys get fooled on occasion. In fact a few clones have gone through Barret Jackson as authentic, only to be revealed as clones later. Do your due diligence and contact a specialist if at all possible. And with the record keeping in the 60-70's they can't always be 100% positive on a car.
