Wireless charging hit or miss

I just got a white 2021 801a. So I love the wireless apple car play but the wireless charging only works some of the time. I have an iPhone 12 Pro. With a thin apple case on it. Wondering if anyone else has a similar issue. Will try with no case next time I drive it and see if that’s the problem.

Tried two different iPhones and its the same. iPhone 13Pro, no case, works sometimes. iPhone 12 mini, case, and no case, works sometimes. I don‘t know why it so finicky. I noticed both phones seem to get pretty warm. I guess it takes a toll to run Wireless CarPlay AND wireless charge. I figured maybe it intentionally charges intermittently to avoid over heating but I don‘t know of anything out there smart enough to pull this off. Maybe it just sucks, maybe I’ll try paying attention to the wireless charging while NOT connected to CarPlay As an experiment.

It is working, it just doesn't replace as much power as Android Auto or Apple CarPlay use. It is a shame because I plan an always running Android Auto. Guess I am forced to plug in my phone for longer rides.

Been doing some experimenting. Seems like iPhones are a little hit or miss with the wireless charger. I tried my work Android (Samsung S9) and never noticed any issues.

I found that for my iP 12 mini with a regular Apple silicone case (non-magsafe) I place it ports towards passenger and pushed all the way to the right. For iP 13 pro in generic Amazon case (non-magsafe) I place it ports towards driver and pushed all the way to they right. This seems to be the sweet spot for aligning the charging coils within the phones and the pad. I’ll keep an eye out but it worked consistently for the Mini. Now I need a little more time with the Pro.

With your S9, are you seeing the battery percentage increase while using wireless Android Auto?

I did not use android auto. I’ve only used CarPlay with iOS. Both iPhones, until I found the sweet spot, would charge for a few minutes and then stop charging. Although I never used android auto I never saw it NOT charge while on the pad. My issue isn’t so much that the charger isn’t fast enough but rather that it simply wasn’t charging after a few minutes until I found the sweet spots.

With iPhones using CarPlay the charge seems to maintain its level but I haven’t taken note of what percentage I placed it on the charger and what percentage it was after the drive.

The iP13 pro still seems to be a little hit or miss, although slight more on the hit side for charging now.

I put my I phone on the pad yesterday to test it out. Drove for 15-20 minutes and charge went from 59 up to 69 percent while I was streaming Pandora. Seems good
