I don't get it???
How can a tire that can get tread life of more then 50K miles be discussed as a (ice and snow) winter tire.
Once a tire is no longer performing as intended, it will be replaced! Never mind the tread remaining!
If you have a commuter that needs max live span and is not looked at for performance...OK, ... but my Raptor is not a commuter; if the tires fall off, there will be replaced!
My car has about 12K miles on it and I'm on the fourth set of tires; it is not tread life, it is performance!

At this point the DuraTruc's on my truck perform flawlessly; summer, winter, ice and snow at 11K miles.

Wow 4 sets in 12K you must see a lot of harsh conditions unless you are talking about another vehicle then your Raptor maybe a sports car that sees lots of track time.

You hit the nail on the head about performance vs tread life. I am getting a new set of Duratracs for Snoball because I want a fresh set. My current set have 22K with maybe half tread depth left and they could do the run but they lack a little in terms of performance. I will run them out in the summer. Are they bad no but as a semi retired rally guy I want the most control on a "run".

Those duratracs should keep you out of the ditch this year. Lol...
I enjoyed their performance on the pre run.

GREAT LAKES RAPTOR EXCURSIONS

Yes they would work but I just can't seem to shake the racer in me that wants a fresh set! I am using my stk wheels so now I will have 2 sets of tires 1 for summer and 1 for winter.

I am very happy with the duratrac, and will say the Raptor spec BFG was a better tire then I thought in the snow compared to the non Raptor spec BFG

It's a SLK 55 AMG with a Kleemann Blower :)

The rubber gets harder and the shorter nubs have less flex.

AMG SLK 55 with blower = very low life for rear tires!!! Love that car! A freind has a 2008 CLK AMG black series that I may become the 3rd owner on some day if he ever sells it. I day dream about it often.

I spend a lot of time in the winter driving in the mountains with the most common road surface being plowed and icy and less often deep snow. My last two cars were Subarus and I had Blizzaks on one and Hakkapeliittas on the other. When I bought the Raptor, I started looking around for dedicated winter tires and didn't find much. I'm currently planning on swapping my BFGs for some Duratracs but I sent out a few emails.

I just heard back from Nokian and I thought it could be useful to others here looking at winter options. They are coming out with the Rotiiva AT in 315/70-17 but as of now couldn't confirm availability dates. While I was looking at the newer tires on their site, I noticed that the Hakkapeliitta LT2 now comes in a 275/65-20 as well. I'm not sold on the idea of running 20s but it's something to think about.

Winter Tires

Had a question regarding winter tires. I'm going to setup the stock rims with winter rubber. I'm trying to decide between the two tires. I won't be doing much in terms of off-roading throughout the winter, but I'm thinking I'll want to even do a 5th tire and have it as a dedicated winter spare. I'm planning on going with Methods come spring time and put the stock BFGs on there until they're worn out. I'd like your thoughts!

I run methods on duratracs year round. Great in both rain and snow thus far, not too loud, ride is pretty comfortable too.

Duratrac's because they look awesome and perform awesome in the winter. Plus they make a great year round tire to should you need to run them all year.
