Winter/Snow Tires

I ran the KO2 last year and the Duratrac the 4 winters before that and here is what I think.

The KO2 was good in light and deep snow, the Duratrac studdable is better in ice conditions. No studs here in MI. they are illegal. I have run studded tires before and they have a real advantage on ice.

I have run both tires at the Snoball run and liked them equally but the KO2 gives up a little on the ice unless you have studs then they would suck in that comparison.

Nokkia makes a great snow tire and I believe only one version in the 315/70/17 size I would love to try them but my KO2 deadlock set up only has 2,000 miles to one more time at Snoball.

I did a few 'out of bounds' shortcuts last year also in PA. The other drivers are always the toughest obstacles!

I found the stock K02's do just fine.

We had 4 events ton STL last year. 15 inches, 6, inches, 6, inches, and 4 inches. The tires did just fine.

The 15 inch event was in the absence of any type of plowing at all. we got so much so fast, everything was paralyzed. Even snow removal. But I was able to go anywhere i wanted without worry.

Felt very composed turning and stopping as well.

I’m in Canada and I ran the KO2s last year. No real problem in the winter. I did a couple hooligan runs in deep rutted snowmobile roads and they performed well. Quite the rooster tail of snow behind lol

I’ll run KO2s again this year and when they wear out I’ll probably switch to Nokian LT3s. Can’t run studded here.
I’ve had Nokian Hakkas in the past and they’re excellent on snow and ice.

I also second duratracs! No issues with them in winter. Also ran the hakka on my SRT jeep. Great winter tire as well. 3rd but pricey option. Have a buddy with a jeep that ran the Pitbull PBX last winter and now swears by them in snow and ice. He was a previous duratrac lover as well.

I live in eastern Quebec and we can get 120 to 160 inches of snow. Have been running nokian on sti and grand cherokee srt in the past. Will be running stock size nokian LT3 studded this winter. Can’t wait to try the raptor in the snow!

duratracs imo are the perfect compromise between on road and off road.

dedicted winter tires like nokians will be better on road, no question at all. But they will fall short off road.

really depends on intended use, climate in your area, etc. theres no perfect tire for everyone.

Ko2s are fine! No issues and we got hit with huge snow last year. We get lots of ice and the raptor is solid. Towed 2 sleds into northern wisco and its a non issue.

That said. I am a duratrac fan boy and will go with duratracs when the bfgs go bald.

I'm in northern Alberta and get extreme cold and icy roads. Proper studded winter tires are the best choice here. I have Nokian LT3s on my Raptor. I have had both studded Duratracs and LT2s on my previous truck and the LT2s were significantly better on road. If you are only concerned about a few dumps of snow and don't care about extreme temperatures or ice the Duratracs are a solid choice (they do have issues with balancing though).

I’m curious as to what your gripes were with the KO2 in snow, as this has been a concern of mine and I have no experience with them. I’ve always run mud terrains through the winter, most recently the Cooper STT pros. I’ve been considering switching them out, but everyone seems to swear that KO2s are great in the snow.

That was a previous thread he started last winter, outlining the issues he had with the stock KO2s in snow, along with some other things. Entertaining, but nothing of particular value.

Good information! I didn't know they were illegal in good ol' Michigan.

Illegal on paved roads. I know some guys with property up north and they run them off the paved roads without issue, get caught by MSP, OR DNR and youll be paying.
