Correct.. It changes the whole dynamics of the shock.. Since the shock piston is being forced (because of higher preload) to stay in bypass (soft zone). Basically flutters in this zone because of fluid bypassing piston. So there is little resistance on the piston causing the harshness/pogo effect at top perch..

It should also be mentioned, that a liquid is non-compressible, but a gas is. That is why the ports are important.

I think what he was getting at, is that adjusting the pre-load has other intended or sometimes "unintended" results... It's not just the height you're adjusting, it also affects the way the shock behaves and performs.

Stock shocks have the same adjustability of course, but you'll hear many people complain about the top perch! While the height looks cool, it drives like a pogo stick off road! Haha

I remember I did it to my truck a long time ago, drove it for about 10 minutes hit a speed bump and dropped it back down to mid. I always try to talk people out of doing 3rd perch if I can. Way to much pre-load on the spring.
