What’s the fascination with 37” tires all about?

I’m buying some new wheels and tires. I’ve been wanting 37’s after seeing “Jacks” truck (Icon Rebounds in bronze). But then I started reading.... Heavier, more expensive, get worse mpg’s, will wear front end components faster, maybe harder on trans.... then you have to hack up the truck a bit and add suspension components that may also cause premature wear....

For what, an inch more ground clearance? Why wouldn’t the prudent thing be to get another set of BFG KO2s (315/70/17) which seem to be pretty awesome.

What am I missing? Would anyone even be able to tell if this truck was on 35’s?

Of course bigger tires are going to cost and weigh more and be less efficient. The benefits are more clearance and sidewall flex and they handle rough stuff better. It depends on what matters to you.

Looks & performance are the most common reasons in my opinion.

Although you will have a slight power loss, a 37" tire will perform better than a 35" tire offroad. The bigger the tire, the less it will fall into a hole, skipping over an obstacle more freely than a 35" tire would. Think of a pot hole in the road, some holes may wreck a Honda civic that is running a 25" tire, compared to a raptor you may ride right over it due to tire size.

Every driver is different, 37s dont make sense for everyone.

I have been back and forth on this. I decided when my stock tires wear out to just replace it with a true 35. That will help fill in the wheel wells and maintain stock suspension. A win win to me.

I went back and forth for a while on this myself, but ultimately settled on 37's. But it's more than just an inch more ground clearance, it's an inch more leverage over obstacles and through the rough stuff (and also an inch more leverage over your suspension wear parts and drive drivetrain).

I should also point out that my mileage only dropped by about .2-.3 MPG.

Once you go 37s, you won't go Back!

The OP is right, there are some downsides to 37s that deal with performance. But once you mod for performance, you mitigate that issue. Trimming wheel well is also subjective when you get correct suspension lift.

I appreciate the extra ground clearance, pretty sure I am ready for the zombie apocalypse!

The 315/70’s are the metric equivalent of 35x12.5’s. Oh and 99% of 35x12.5’s measure out at 34.5”

Your hack job looks to be the equivalent to a coat hanger abortion.

Did you get into the computer and change the tire size? If so, how did you do it?

LOL Yeah most people don’t realize the speedo/odometer don’t know your actual tire diameter unless you have the nGauge or similar that will let you change it. If you switch from 35” to 37” without changing ECU tire data then the measured distance will be less for a given distance, so your inficated mileage will be less. Your mpg, distance, and road speed will indicate less than actual.
