— Many stress cracks are only visible with UV dye.

Dealers oft tell customers — ‘if no visible cracks are seen ‘not to worry’. — Any one else have an experience of dealers not disclosing or discovering within warranty?

[photos: Leak Detector UV Dye, on Gen 2 [P552] driver’s side intake manifold. Ford dealers quote 7.5-11 customer-billable hours labor and $350—500 parts, post-warranty, for this repair. OEM ‘counter Parts are $143 with a DIY repair time 5-7 hours. Other ‘oil consumption TSBs relate to ‘integrated oil separator’ molded into the valve cover necessitating a replacement of the entire valve cover/s.]

Ford, last week, extended a recall, only, to those 737,000 vehicles that are a specific fire safety risk, leaving the the other 19M vehicles already in TSB for ‘at-will repair’ subject to the decretion of dealers:

“‘The integrated oil separator housing could crack and develop an oil leak that might cause an engine fire”’] — https://driving.ca/auto-news/driver...s-vehicles-over-software-and-fire-risk-issues.

Dealers and Ford know of these injection molding failures and have been telling customers there are no visible cracks [from owners reports on various forums] — often leading to post-warranty discovery by consumers. Many of the 20M+ are already under TSBs to replace valve covers for ‘oil consumption’.

[photo: Underside of Gen 2 [P552] driver’s side intake manifold showing triple-point stresses near integrated oil separator. UV dye is needed to see many of these cracks as they are on a mold-line, likely due to von Mises stresses at injection [OP]. Eventually these stresses — if sufficient — will form a hairline crack.]

The 1.5 recall has absolutely nothing to do with the 3.5. Where are you coming with with this “20M” number?

Valve cover replacement is 4 hours. 7.5 to 11 is not even in the ballpark. The majority of issues occur due to dealer techs prying on the valve covers on the incorrect locations, causing stress cracks.

EDIT: There are your 2 first posts? Do you own a Raptor? Maybe try introducing yourself first?

Is 4 hrs for both or each? Back in the day you could remove and replace an engine in 8, lol.

I can pull a turbo Subaru engine, replace the clutch and put it all back in like 3.5 hours with one helper.

How about one of their CVTs? Wife’s just threw the dreaded at temp alert.

Trade in it before it’s completely gone. I attended a ASE Seminar on CVTs hosted by Subaru. They said there is zero tolerance in belt slippage. Even if it slips once, and just for a second, it’s done. They also are not serviceable, it requires replacement of the assembly.

Message received and understood.
From the stories I’ve seen online, I believe it. It should have been a clue that they extended the cvt warranty to 10/100k, which she is conveniently out of by now. We’re both a little miffed at the whole situation, but as you well know the 3.0awd Lincoln is just... better in every way :)

She got 11 reliable years out of the s00b... well 10.5 years / 135k so there’s that. It did get respectable economy but it is old dog slow. Glad I picked up that ’20 Lincoln last year.
