I have been on the fence with getting a tune for the truck since I bought it (2013 6k miles). Had to take the truck it for a pop in the front end during tight parking lot turns. Notices the truck had began to start shifting squirrelly, especially in and out if 3rd so I thought I would have the dealer check that out while it was in. Ended up having to get the PCM reflagged with a ford "patch". If I would have had a tune it would have been out of pocket. Still want a tune, but today makes me more worried about it. Any thoughts

I'm puttng a tune on my truck this week, I have 35,000 miles on my 2013 so I figured it is time. Maybe wait till you get a few more miles on the truck. Make sure that your PCM is good before you start playing with it.

If you value your powertrain warranty then you should not put a tune on. Even if you return your tune the dealers can see that it was flashed with another tune as the PCM stores a programming counter as they have a limited number of times they can be programmed.

There is no doubt the dealers can see if a tune has been done, even after returned to stock. I am just wondering if the shifting issue I was having would have been a "non issue" with a tune. It wasn't bad, just made the truck lag when shifting into 3rd, and then the truck would "hang" in 3rd for a longer period than the other gears. Really, the only reason I brought it up to the dealer was to get a free check out of the transmission and PCM before I put in the tune. I really didn't expect them to find anything, the fact that they did concerns me with regards to a tune. I had just received a quote from Chris at freedom for a CAI and tune I was about to pull the trigger on.

Tunes are fine for most people most of the time.. But there is always the one time when you will take it to your dealer and "he will see the tune" and your problem is now a costly fix. There is no questions dealers can see the tune if you put one in, but will the dealer ignore it? If you really want to maintain your warranty, DO NOT USE A TUNER... If you don't mind that the transmission blew up and you have to pay for it because you had a tune at one point, then no worries...

And how many times would that be?

:hmmm2:

An uneducated (safe) guess would be in the hundreds but it really depends on the EEPROM built into the PCM, and I don't have several hundred bucks spare to pull one apart to find out. They are really not designed to be reflashed that many times over their lifetime.

Ok, as long I can do 93 performance tune to 87 performance tune a couple dozen times, I'm good to go.

I am about ready to pull the trigger on a tuner myself. Chris at Freedom gave me a quote and want to do it before the 5-star sale this weekend. He said its better to have a tune friendly dealership. But a little shy to ask the service manager if they are as that might open a can of worms. How do you even ask that?

But in all reality, even if the dealer is tune friendly, they might be for other warranty repairs but I can't imagine them being friendly if something goes wrong with the PCM or any of the powertrain, surely every dealer sooner or later is going to blame it on the tune???
