I did my first oil change on my new Raptor recently at 5,000 miles and noticed ATF leaking from the bell housing on the front of the transmission. My Ford dealer got back with me and said they think it is the front pump seal but said something about putting dye in the transmission to help trace the problem.
Through the bit of reading I've done on here it looks like this is or was a fairly common problem a few model years back. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what I should ask the dealer to fix/replace to ensure this is fixed correctly. Im pretty disappointed in the blue oval brand as a formally loyal GM person, with only 5K on the truck and a leaking transmission.
My other concern has been with the torque converter lock up. I took it offroading a few weeks ago and ended up descending a very steep hill. I put the truck in 4L and 1st gear to let the engine braking help hold the truck back on the steep descent. The weird thing is sometimes the engine breaking would hold the truck back, then suddenly it would almost freewheel and accelerate till about 4K rpm, then finally engine breaking would kick in. Most of the time the freewheeling would start again at 3K rpm then kick back in at 4K.
If it did anything consistently during this long descent, I might give Ford the benefit of a doubt and figure its normal but the whole action was very erratic and dangerous at times. I've never driven a vehicle that wouldn't just crawl down hill in 4L with just engine breaking. It makes me think the torque converter isn't properly locking/slipping to provide the necessary engine braking.
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated, even if someone can tell me this is typical of their Raptor. I love what Ford did to create the Raptor, it's a major reason I don't own my GM truck anymore. I just want to be sure this isn't the start of more major transmission problems and want some confidence that it is fixed thoroughly.
