So I want to discuss this transmission that’s coming in our new Raptor Rs.

I’ve heard nothing but terrible things about the 10 speed transmission Ford has recently been putting out. I myself have had first-hand experience with this in my 2018 Ford expedition platinum. My transmission went out and had to be replaced at 40,000 miles. A coworker of mine with the same vehicle just had her transmission go out but around 30,000 miles. A person from my Church with the same exact vehicle is now having transmission issues and hers is a 2020 expedition platinum.

The transmission that comes in our new trucks is the exact same, correct?

Does anyone else have issues about this especially with so much increased horsepower and torque?
The issue with your expedition was HEAT related. Transmission was getting too HOT

So yes there were some that had issues all related to transmission cooling.

I had a 2018 F150 5.0 10R80. I loved it so much I installed one in my 57 yr old truck. It’s Fantastic!

The RaptorR will be so well tested i am putting my $ on line it will not be an issue. I am told it has component’s from the 10R140 or parts designed to hold the power.

Even the earlier Raptors (all 10R80) have completely different transmission cooling than standard F150.

Be happy to show the differences as i have both here and have spent a TON of time learning/studying them.

My 57 yr old truck project has the Raptor design and it is impossible to even get it anywhere near normal operating temps.

If I remember correct normal operating temp on 10R80 Expeditions 150 is 203 or 205 deg to 215
With the Raptor setup in my truck i have hard time getting it past 160 deg.

The Expeditions can get to 240+ killing the transmission. Pulling hills or towing. 100% Ford guy but that was poor design.

Transmissions should not be flushed; just drain, replace filter, and refill. The maximum service interval is 150k, which is under ideal conditions. Definitely would be a good idea to have the fluid and filter changed with the mileage you have.

Copy all.

Fluid out, filter out, refilled. Then get back on the gas driving like I'm in SICARIO 3, in Mexico.

Interesting re: the Expedition. Acknowledging that anecdotal evidence is, well, anecdotal, since everyone else is sharing theirs, I'll throw in that the transmission in my wife's 2020 Expedition with only 20K miles is acting up significantly -- specifically, cutting out, including in the middle of an intersection twice on a trip to Colorado last weekend. Also anecdotally, I've had no issues with the 10R80 in two ('17 and '21) Raptors.

The 2011-2016 F150 had a separate cooler in front at least on tow package trucks. 2017-20 had small i call pankcake type cooler between engine and transmission under torque converter area. There were 2 short transmission lines going in and out of cooler with engine coolant lines going back to cooler.

On The Raptor those large lines are transmission fluid not coolant and there is a large transmission cooler up front of radiator/condenser.
A pancake type cooler sits in front of engine more to Heat transmission when cold. Too hard to describe without good diagram. I learned the hard way on my swap because one of lines was not in parts book!

I ended up buying a bunch of wrong listed lines to figure it out. The Lincoln Navigator with Raptor engine had correct listing. Here are 3 diff versions. One on right is Raptor. Transmission fluid
Center is non Raptor/Expedition carries coolant. Busy now. Gotta run

Differences.

Regular setup not adequate. I say engineers knew or why did they change 100% for Raptor? Prob my first negative thing i have posted about Ford.
This thread pertaining to the R. Rest assured if Raptor had total different setup than std. the RaptorR will be leapyears ahead

Total different. This is setup I installed on my ‘66 Raptor truck.
It works way too well as does cooling system. Cant get enough heat in it.

The 10 speed has been taking 755+ hp for years in the Shelby trucks. I've never read anything about Shelby modifying them, so they must be tough right out of the box.

Shelby's "CLAIMED" hp. What are the real numbers? Weak point of the 10R80 usually the clutches. The R will have much better upgrades.

I have read of a few 10 spd transmission failures on here that could be traced back to having the system flushed out, for no good reason other than all new fluid at 40k miles must be better. I think those guys still come around and say the tranny sh-it the bed though, without mentioning that little caveat.

Drive it and forget it.
I'm 100 percent in this boat. I never replace the tranny fluid. Ever. Soon as you do, it will break.
