both of those looks very suspiciously like “model” legislation put forth by the interstate group ALEC or similar lobbying groups.

audible at 200 feet is easy, but there’s a lot of subjectivity in both the linked laws. Not knowing the penalty for both it’s difficult to say how much of a thorn in the butt it would be, but worst case you could drop the PSI down to ~110 to get the db under control for “reinspection” These appear to be equipment violations, not moving violations - there may be a horn abuse moving violation, but the difference is that moving violations jack up your insurance rates, by and large inspection violations do not. both the quoted laws are subjective and vague enough to be subject to a challenge if you have the time and money. In no way would it be worth the hassle, but if you had nothing better to do...

Stay within the db limits that semis are subject to and you’re safe. From what I’ve observed, probably about 125db max would be sustainable legally if you were ‘caught’. the stock horn is under 100db, completely hearing safe. air horns, like are on trucks run in the 115-130 db range and I think 130 is really pushing it. 130 is on par with an unsuppressed rifle round and will ring your ears.

Don’t be abusive and nothing to worry about.

I have had a dual set of Hella airhorns that work in conjunction with my oem horn on my car for almost 20 years of inspections with nothing being said. The only thing that was ever said was at a tire place, that was also an inspection station, they said they thought the horns were awesome when the mechanic honked them to have someone open the garage door to the service bay.

I'm good friends with the local police chief and I give him a toot now and then when I drive past him. I don't know if they make distinctions between train horns and more normal air horns?

Sure! I put 2 plus my regular horn on several cars. I also have one on my bike. They don't have the deep tone like a big air horn, but they are screamers and are really loud. I've stopped a bunch of cars in their tracks when they were starting to pull out in front of me. They are pretty compact and straight forward to mount. Just try to mount them away from high heat sources like the exhaust manifold, pipes, and turbo in the engine bay and they last a long time. They don't like being heat soaked.

I know a lot of folks knock the train horns, and think they get abused - I’m sure some folks do...

Thanks to another FRF member I picked up a set of Marco direct drive horns, they clock in at 117db, stockers are in the 90’s. They’re nowhere near as loud as these rigs but I’m convinced they kept some inattentive twit from side swiping me this weekend coming home from the range.

she darted out to turn left in front of me and apparently didn’t notice Lucille’s considerable girth, so I laid on the horns and miracle of miracles she stopped in the median before hitting us. way too close for comfort but she definitely heard us.

Did you connect the Marco horns to an aux switch or the the main horn? Looking at adding Marcos

I connected them to the main horn circuit, using relays and a battery run.
