I know this is smart A@#, but here is my take on that:
Saves them postage, they wont have to send out recall notices, the trucks will allready be at the dealerships on a regular basis.

BMW's model is, in my opinion, a POS. They scrimp on service when they're new, while they're paying for it which ensures that the vehicles will need lots of service once the "free service" period ends.

If you're leasing or going to sell in the first three years "free service" is good. If you're keeping the vehicle how can you, in good conscience, go 10,000 miles for the first oil and filter change, etc?

You are exactly right. The Mfg is going to push the envelope as far as they can for obvious reasons. After all they are not the ones who pay for a shortened lifespan.
