I think it just adds a little something to the back-end look rather than simply having an empty hitch receiver.

I could leave it in my truck and pull it out when needed but now it's always there if I need it. Also, it's nice to have something there just in case some idiot decides to try and kiss my back bumper. It also has a nice look to it, I think.

I run it but I don't keep the d-ring on, only when I need it.

I used mine a few times this winter pulling other vehicles out of the ditch.
