Post Baja Skid Plate Report.

This thing rocks. We ran down lots of roads I have been down before where I scraped the stock skid. We did 1000 miles of dirt, and it was perfect, I only scraped this skid once on a hard bottom out. The higher angle really makes a difference offroad. I will snag a pic of the lack of scrapes on this one.

Anyone who is looking for a good looking piece that functions. Look no further.

I have mix feelings about the TMX skid. It looks great and I am sure it is tough as nails. My concern is it offers zero protection for the lower control arm mounts. I and many others had a little encounter with a well hidden rut on the RPG SEMA run that resulted in some skid plate action. Didn't think much of it at the time, but on my post run inspection I noticed it had sheared the skid and dented the passenger side LCA mount. I could only imagine the dent would have been much worse had the skid not absorbed most of the energy prior to the LCA mount digging in.

Nothing a big adjustable wrench and some elbow grease cant fix.

Turf, I may be wrong, but I think many of the aftermarket bumpers (whether from RPG, SDHQ, Outlaw, etc.) narrow the front skid and eliminate the little lip that would help slide the truck to the next skid. I even think the WSI prototype on WhtRapta, which has a pretty wide skid, exposes the LCA mounts a little. I was worried about this initially but never saw any issues reported on the forum until now. Anyone else have issues similar to Turf?

I assume for those of us still running 35s this is more of a concern. I would like to improve my approach angle and am even willing to saw the frame horns off, but will never run 37s, so maybe I should just stick with the factory skid. Of course, I have no idea what I am talking about. Anyone care to weigh in?

That is what I am worried about with these narrower skid plates, too. I would like to see some solutions that are full width at the lower cross member.

Me, too!!

So, what options are out there for a full width, but reinforced skid plate? Mine is pretty messed up from a big jump and I was going to go with a TMX but now reconsidering.

It seems there is enough interest in a full size bolt in skid plate that we will begin work on one. It wont look as sexy as the current version, but for those worries about the lower control arms it will make you feel at ease.

I wonder if you matched up the ICON LCA skids with the skinny TMX if that would provide adequate LCA mount protection.
