We can do that top hoop. However I think it hurts the flow of the bumper. If someone is interested in having one made like that we will be happy to make it. We design the base and the customer designs the rest. Birdman had a big part in the design of this bumper, he had some awesome ideas some we could do and some we couldn't. He has a very active imagination.

how much additional for chromoly, and what weight savings will there be from being able to use thinner, equal strength, moly over mild?

i debated a little myself if I wanted the moly or not. i hashed it out with tim a few times on the phone. i just figured it was "the way to go" after reading several threads on the topic.

the breakthrough for me came when i realized - if you hit something hard enough with a mild steel bumper to the point where you think moly would have made a difference then you have bigger problems than the type of tubing your bumper is made of. the quality of the welds will also play a huge role in how the bumper withstands an impact and from what i can tell Tim is #1 in that dept.

nobody wants to crash their truck and their new bumper but honestly if you slam in to a rock wall doing 55 it's gonna crush any bumper mild or moly. and you're gonna have all sorts of destruction aside from the bumper its self. in reality an impact capable of folding a mild steel bumper would either fold a moly bumper or at least mess it up to the point where it's not repairable. either way you're out a bumper, probably some frame damage, body work and maybe some suspension damage.

if comparing the stock bumper(which nobody has ever complained about) to even mild steel the strength is leaps and bounds better in the aftermarket application.

It works with the winch mount no problem. You just order them both from the site its 249.95 and it bolts right in with our bumper. We will modify the front plate to hold the fair lead. Need someone to order one so we can get photos of the winch set up.

Birdman is right. When it comes to chromoly there are many pros and cons.

Pros.
-You can use thinner wall material to shave weight and still have strength.
-You can use smaller diameter tubing to shave off weight.
-Chromoly tends to spring back better then mild steel in a wreck.

Cons.
- Its way more expensive.
- It should be welded using TIG not mig. Tig imparts more heat into the joint chromoly needs to have that heat. It also needs to cool down at a uniform rate.
-Mig welding chromoly can cause fractures at the joint. 80% of failures in chromoly happen at the joint or within one inch of the joint. Thats why you need a trained welder using tig.
- It tends to snap after it reaches its max stress.

Mild steel


Pros:

- Mild steel is less expensive then chromoly
- Its easier to weld then chromoly
-It bends easier then chromoly
- In crashes it will bend more before it breaks.
Cons:

- Its heavier but the strength can equal chromoly with a larger wall thickness
- It tends to bend in crashes and stay bent.
- It depends a lot on what kind of steel you have and the process to make it.

For the every day guy who isnt super worried about weight mild DOM steel is the way to go. Now if you want to get the chromoly and save some weight go ahead its not hurting anything. However, If the bumper is poorly welded or not made correctly you could experience a large failure during and accident. The welds could snap causing your bumper to fall off.

Im sorry to ramble on like this....

Thats why while everyone is talking about looks you you need to also pay close attention to how the bumper is made. Does it have nice welds. Like the photo below or are the welds bad like the other photo. When you are replacing a bumper on the front of your truck you are putting your life and your truck in the hands of that bumper. I know that looks are important but I dont care how something looks if it dosent do what it say its going to.

Now im not going to promise that our bumpers are indestructible. But I will promise that when you buy from us you get what you pay for. We may cost less but that say nothing about our quality. I understand that. My thoughts though are if I'm spending $50k on my raptor, I'm not going to sneeze over a small difference in cost for going with a better material bumper. Yes they may be equal strength, but the thinner wall chromoly does save some weight. And while 15 lbs or so may not sound like a lot, it adds up over time in a lot of places. Equal strenght, lesser weight, reasonable price difference, sounds reasonable to me.

I just had a rollcage installed my my 00 HD truck, and went with Chromoly in there. Cost a bit more, and if I ever need to USE the cage, the truck is trashed anyway, and the safety of the chromoly is equivalent to the safety of a mild steel thicker wall cage, so really the end result difference is only the weight. With as much money as I have invested, I'd prefer to go with the higher quality setup.

And as for welding, same with my cage, TIG welding only, I wouldn't want a bumper with MIG welds all over it.


Going back to the comment on bending the tubes, I have done some fabrication building a Hybrid SAE car, and we used some mild steel and some chromoly, and I did all the bending for the tubes for the chassis, and holy cow, night and day difference bending mild steel vs bending chromoly.

Reptar I agree 100%. I am in no way talking people out of chromoly I just want people to know the difference. Just so you know when we make the front bumper not just the tube is chromoly the mounts and brackets are chromoly to. The only thing on the new bumper thats not chromoly is the front face piece because of the size. So when some of the other manufactures say your getting chromoly make sure its the whole bumper not the tube.

That falls right back in with looks arent everything. II would rather have a nice looking bumper that did what it said it did for a great price. Call some of the other manufactures and see what they charge you for the newer sleak bumper styles in full chromoly. 1400-1500$ maybe. Our is 1049.95$ Some of those guys arent even TIG welding their chromoly bumpers. There is over 35ft of welds in our bumper and it takes a single welder a few hours to weld it. Our bumper also comes standard with 3/16 alum skid plate you dont have to pay 100$ more for it like some of the other guys.

If you want quality looks and an awesome front bumper for a great price give us a call.
