Our Raptors have differentials in both the front and rear axles. A lot of us have a general idea of what the purpose of the differential is... but did you ever wonder how a differential really works? And why it is so important? The following video... made back in the 1930's... gives the best step-by-step explanation I've ever seen. Enjoy!

Great post Mark. I know exactly how a diff works and still I found myself really interested in this; it almost makes you wonder if that's how the original design came about... on the floor of a living room somewhere, with tinker toys spread around.

Thanks!

I like it Mark, thanks! The introduction with the motorcycle riders was interesting.

For an old school video it was well done especially considering their video limitations. Imagine if they made this video now, they would have used CAD generated animation and color! :) Amazing how effectively it communicates the concept and design even after all these years!

There's something about a differential and duct tape that just doesn't go together...

Pretty neat. I've always had a basic concept, but that really dumbed it down to my level.

I have seen vids done with CAD /CGI and I think this actually gets the point across better. But then, I am old.
