What parts/extension pieces do you use?

I got the male and female 1" balls and screwed them together with an extension arm.

I bought these 2 and screwed them together to make another joint to attach another arm.

RAM 1" Ball with 1/4"-20 Male Threaded Post for Cameras

RAM M6 Threaded Female Hole with 1" Ball

Then go here and choose what length arm you want.

I've had the cup holder ram mount and the windshield mount.
The cup holder one shacks everywhere but the windshield one is awesome and can mount in a lot of places.

We use this with our iPad Mini - works great!

If I get this mount, can I then add the extensions? Or is this a single unit that cannot be lengthened with the aforementioned extensions?

Yes you can extend it.
Mine has a specific cradle for my tablet, that one looks like universal which I just used that pic for reference.

The Wife Unit said, "Absolutely not" when I showed her the $181 total for the mount and extensions. She's under the impression that we can just hold it on our lap.

I need another option. A cheaper one.

Will the truck's gps/nav pick up enough of the roads/trails so I don't have to take the tablet?

Your passenger could hold the tablet if you only want to use it occasionally. Still would take it if it were me. Then you can look ahead or see how much trail you have whenever you want. Personally I would prefer some mount that allows the driver to see the tracks. It is very handy to see some of the turns in advance.
Check the ram mount site for a fixed mount possibly?
