I had the same issue when I took mine apart to install the light for the shift indicator. I swear that I did not touch anything on the shift lever assembly except to remove the knob. Basically the same as if you were to install a carbon fiber knob

I had to open the hole up in the side of the shift knob to allow it to move down a little more so it would make contact with the micro switch, that`s all it took
After 3 hours of ******** in my pants thinking I destroyed my shifter assembly.
When you have the knob removed press down on the plastic rod in the center of the shift rod and if you look from the passenger side you will see how it makes contact with the switch.

I bet it works fine without the knob on it ?? the switch sends a signal to the computer so it makes sure that you have the truck in park

I hope this helps you because I could not find anything out there about this
