Bad news for manufacturers not meeting the CAFE standards:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.g...-25 CAFE Penalties FR - Website Version_0.pdf

TLDR: ..."
The policy increased the fines for missing average fuel economy targets from $5.50 to $14 per .1 mpg per vehicle, in response to a 2015 law meant to catch old government penalties up to inflation. This is the first significant increase in this penalty since CAFE rules were first established in 1975 (the penalty was originally $5, then $5.50 since 1997).

Automakers who manage to stay within the limits gain credits that can be sold to other automakers who would otherwise be penalized. Automakers’ compliance or lack thereof can be found in DOT’s CAFE dashboard, where it can be seen that FCA missed the 40.9 mile-per-gallon target by nearly 11 mpg in 2020 (CAFE mpg is not calculated the same way as normal mpg and is more generous, thus the high numbers)..."

When you look at Ford’s CAFE dashboard, they’re under the curve on both car and light truck. I’ve said on FRF before, I think the Raptor R isn’t coming and even if that was wrong, this is going to make Ford take a very serious look at whether or not they can take the CAFE hit. I want them to bring it out and if they didn’t force me into a moonroof to have the tailgate step, I’d strongly consider it but I don’t think it makes it to stealerships sales floors.

Perhaps, I'm looking at this wrong, but I it looks like Ford is above the curve on light truck, at least for the next couple years. Not sure if the projections are including hybrid and EV sales for upcoming vehicles. But anyway, given that, it seems like Ford could get a way with a Raptor R in limited amounts for the next couple years. Also wondering if they could start limited sales of V8 trucks if they need to.

It's off topic, but wondering if the Bronco is considered a passenger car or light duty truck, and what Ford is doing to massively increase their passenger car MPG for 2023.

Are trucks a separate pool? Is it calculated at a corporate truck and care level, or just at the corporate level?

Either way, I’m still skeptical that the Raptor R gets released.

This is what you're looking at, right? There are different lines (alternatives) depending on how CAFE standards may be upgraded, but in any case, Ford trucks look to be in the clear over the next few years. Alternative 3 is sown below. If a Republicans wins and 2024 (alternative 0), they could be in excellent shape.

Right, I see the model lines separated, but I’m not clear on whether the cars not meeting standards affects trucks and vice versa. Is it one average pool for the whole company, or are trucks counted separately for CAFE at the company level?

I wouldn’t count on political team R to avert, reverse or undo this. As much as I am not fond of it, I have to admit there is a component of economic and efficient vehicles contributing to energy independence. We exercise this at a micro level every day. - ex.
I just made a run for brew supplies Saturday. 40 miles up and back. Best case the Rap makes 17mpg on that run. The Lincoln? 23.
The ZX14? 40+ mpg ( and it’s a $hit ton faster, more nimble and responsive ).
So, I saved about 10 bucks in fuel costs.

I’m still sticking with no R model as a prediction. Hopefully I’m wrong about this.

Best thing to do is just distract yourself and forget about it. When you forget thats when they’ll call you.
