Have you done this to update an SCT device from an OSX device?

No, but no reason it won't work. I use VirtualBox a lot at work and have used it to flash firmware for R/C ESC's via USB.

Parallels is $$ and doesn't do anything extra that you need. (It has a "seemless" mode that overlays Windows UI onto OSX. Unless you need to keep Windows open all day you don't need that.)

You could also use boot camp to dual boot your Mac, but that would also be overkill.

I updated my x3 with Parallels on a Mac. At the time I was using Parallels 8 on a beta of Mavericks on a Mac Pro and it worked fine. I only have Macs at home (I am an Apple Certified Technician by trade) and use Parallels or Boot Camp whenever I need Windows. No matter what anyone tells you, when you run Boot Camp on a Mac it is the same as running Windows on a PC. Anything that works in Windows works on Boot Camp as well. 99% of everything Windows related works in Parallels as well. The only time you run into problems with Parallels is if it's a device that has to be controlled directly by the operating system and the Mac has control of it's driver, like a PCIe card or something. But USB devices should be no problem. Parallels can take full control of them and then Windows can do whatever it needs to do. 99% of the time, at least. :)

I used to run EFILive under VirtualBox when I had a GM (it also used USB). Worked flawlessly. I especially liked having a completely clean encapsulated Windows OS that *only* had the tuning software installed on it and internet access disabled. I'd probably do this again even if the host OS was also Windows.

We may need to talk more when I get a chance to revisit it.
