I know some of you may think of me a little less after asking this question but I cannot find the answer anywhere else. What is the resonator? How does it work? What does it accomplish (why did ford put it on there)? And if I did want to take it off, how do I go about doing that?

It's the can looking device in front of your muffler, it's supposed to cut down on noise. Search the forum for resonator delete, there should be quite a bit of info on This subject in the exhaust sub forum

The resonator's function is to mix the individual exhaust pulses from the cylindars, and in doing so takes the edge off of the exhaust note. Years ago I put a header and a Flowmaster on a Nissan D21 4x4 with a 2400cc four-banger. The result was an exhaust that was certain to get me arrested. The solution was a resonator in between the header and the muffler, and it was a sweet result.

I do plan on the Mbrp turndown but I thought that backed up just to the muffler and didn't include the resonator? But I'm a moron and should have seen that flange and realized where it bolted onto. Problem solved I guess. I told you some of you would think I was a moron. Thanks Ruger for explaining why it was there. I like to know why as well as how to get rid of it :D

FYI, there is no performance related reason to delete the resonator. It's all about noise and about nothing else, and you may or may not appreciate the additional noise the the resonator removed. It would be smart to work it so that you can easily put the resonator back on again.

Be careful about trying to buy the resonator delete. I purchased one via the f150 forum info and it was still wrong. I ended up going with a QTP cut out and have been happy. I wasn't absolutely committed with chopping the exhaust for a custom set up or paying 1K for a set up that might change the exhaust note only slightly.

Plus I have the best of both worlds currently. I can open the tap for fun and close it for the family trip with the baby still sleeping in the back. Even with the cut out, its not ridiculously loud. If you have locals to meet up with you can hear their set ups before you make your decision. Youtube sound clips don't help that much since the sound quality on a cell phone might not give you the best idea.

Do you have this setup on yours? I imagine the turndown would echo and be loud as hell.
