Fish Creek Wash turns into Hapaha Flat Road as the canyon narrows approaching Pinyon Drop-off. Here's a map showing Fish Creek and you can follow our path as we left Split Rock Road, drove on Fish Creek Wash and ultimately to Hapaha Flat Road.

Further up Hapaha Road you can see Pinyon Drop-off where we heard that Jeeps were coming down. Later on we saw some emergency vehicles that, we can only assume, were headed up to the base of Pinyon Drop-off to help one or more injured people in that party.

Here are some pics from that area:

You can see some of the very steep canyon walls (note that they appear to be mostly sandstone with all sizes of rocks mixed in):

We believe that it was on Hapaha Flat Road that they found Mickey Guidry's blue Jeep (see thread on this missing 16-year old boy)

Raptors parked just off the trail:

Dan and all,

...you can see Pinyon Drop-off where we heard that Jeeps were coming down

Looks like he was one of your Jeeps you were looking for. He was OK according to the report. I bet that's more than you can say for his jeep... that's a big drop off!

March 27Th 2010- Copter 10 was dispatched to assist State Parks and CAL FIRE engine companies for an off road vehicle roll over at the “Drop Off” in Pinyon Mountain. This area is inaccessible by emergency vehicles. When Copter 10 arrived California Highway Patrol Helicopter H-60 was at scene providing medical treatment to the injured. CHP requested Copter 10 to hoist the patient from the bottom of drainage to H-60’s location for transport. The patient was safely hoisted and transported to a local hospital.

Thanks FALC! :D I was thinking about doing a search to see if I could find any news about what might have happened. I figured someone tumbled down the drop-off. Glad he's OK.

Wow look at those pics. Both sets; great flower shots Dan and good find on the rollovers Falcon. Great testimant for carrying some sort of recovery gear.

Really glad to read the Jeep folks were ok in the end. Scary stuff.

Umm...probably some guy in a Jeep?! :D

By the way, Pinyon Drop-off looks to be well worn rock. If one was to come down that thing it's easy to imagine how great it would be to have a feature like Hill Descent Control in your vehicle.

It's easy to imagine coming down that steep, slippery, rocky grade gaining speed along the way until the vehicle is bouncing out of control (and flipping over). Yikes!

That's probably what happened to the Jeeper (just a guess).

Awesome

I've never been offroading and this makes me want to more than ever. I mean I've had 4X4s but my in laws have a ranch which sometimes requires it when it rains etc. But I've never done anything like that.
