It’s pretty simple. If the guy behind you was able to clear the car in the right lane, accelerate to a speed to pass you on the right, and still had plenty of space to make it back in front of you before coming to another car in that lane, then, yes, you were holding up the lane.

How is this so hard to understand?

That's all fine in hindsight, but you can't always tell exactly how fast the vehicle behind you is going to pass, or the vehicles behind them. There's plenty of time where I have gotten over and stuck in the slow lane because I'm only being passed at 5 mph over my current speed, or the train of vehicles behind the passer never has a window for me to get into the passing lane again.

Frequency Hop to another pet peeve, one that I hate even worse than people like @NE Raptor :

People who slow down to below the speed limit, just because they see a cop, or aren’t using cruise control, and lose their nerve when passing a truck.

You’re either cruising along at a few over the speed limit in the left lane, the cop shows up on the horizon, and the guy in front of you slows down to 45.

Are you sure he knows what the speed limit is? Wouldn't it be stupid to slow down to 55 only to still get the ticket because it's a 45 MPH zone?

Or, worse, you about to pass a truck in front of you, but see someone coming up fast from your rear, so you do the right thing and let them have the lane first. But, as soon as they get up to where you are, they slow down and essentially block you in.

I don't see this one very often, but yes, that would be a ****** move, unless there's an obvious reason to slow down. I think people have a subconscious need to be in front all the time, so it's not terribly uncommon to see people go just as fast as they need to be ahead of you, and then slow down to a more comfortable speed. It's not common to be passed up while I'm going 70 in the right lane, only for that vehicle to switch back to the right land in gradually slow to 65....where I'll just pass them again.

I must admit though that I will speed up to pass vehicles at times not because I'm unhappy with their speed so much as I want to put more distance between myself and other vehicles for safety reasons.

When I lived up north you would get pulled over for riding in the fast lane without passing. Down south it seems the fast lane has a different meaning which I'm still trying to understand...

It's simple though, if your not passing anyone get out of the left lane. No reason to ride in it unless you are passing. Speed is irrelevant.
Exactly. This is because it’s not ‘the fast lane’ it’s called ‘the passing lane’. It’s law here in PA

For some reason, PA drivers disregard that when driving in MD. That’s my experience/observation.

I think you missed the whole point of this post, understandable given your triggered responses here but hey there is always one in every crowd. I will still help you understand though....

The original post was this "Question for the group. Do you get people in other trucks driving more aggressively around you? I drive the speed limit and I have guys blowing by me, or at a red light trying to “beat me” off the line.

I’ve driven Ford trucks for the last 25 years and never experienced people reacting to my truck until I bought a Raptor. Am I paranoid, or are other drivers that intimidated?"

My answer and most others was YES - other guys in trucks are constantly tailgating and seemingly pulling up on the right as to challenge you to a race- in an effort to prove something. I have owned many other trucks and never experienced this. Good on you if you don't have to deal with it. I personally cant stand people on the left holding up traffic - we are talking about 2 very different things.

Try coming around the Boston area with your "cruise set on 5-6 mph over" you will get run clean off the road - troopers included. If you can get comfortable with 20-25 over you might survive. Cruise control is not even a thing people use up here, its all 2 lane stop and go in very tight areas unless you get to a major interstate away from the cities.

I'm from the Poconos actually and know of people getting tickets from riding in the passing lane without passing. I sure do miss my fellow yankee drivers...

Are you sure they are trying to beat you off the "line" and not just late for work or an appointment?

They disregard it here in PA too. Sometimes it’s just not possible when using conventional cruise control. Also a large percentage of people are ***** no matter where you are.

Maybe I’m different, but I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used cruise control in my 20 years of driving.

Yes I have adaptive cruise control on my Raptor, but I haven’t used it. Nor do I plan to.

This thread changed topics from page 1 to page 9. Started as Raptor Envy and turned into driving etiquette. And from what I can read, a large number of people do not understand the concept of a passing lane. If you are self-centered and think because you are doing 10 MPG over the speed limit that you are entitled to the left lane..think again. Doesn't matter if you have to slow down to get out of the passing lane. Driving 101.
