Railway Labor act requires strikes to be authorized by the gov’t. We in the airlines are governed by the same.

This, any such union vote is somewhat meaningless. With the consolidation over the last couple decades, no strike that will cripple the economy will be allowed. And particularly not now!

(Dockworkers… under a different law!)

Call Farley Ford. Ask if you can pickup your truck at factory, install your own chips and maybe he'll give you 8k off for all your troubles.

24% pay increase............must be nice.

you know, there hasn't been a raise in 3 years, when the last contract expired, and we all worked thru covid and george floyd riots, and all the other nonsense that has been going on?

also, 10% of that is in the future... its not an instant 24% but compounded over 5 years, 3 of which has passed us by... we'll be doing the same thing in 4 years, if i make it that long..

the fact is, is we are simply not viewed as a skilled labor force. we're just some ape driving a train, who is making you late for work, right? these managers were crapping in their p anties thinking they were going to have to do some actual work, other than them telling me, their book says im doing it wrong.

and all the railroads have been posting billion dollar quarterly profits. its a joke that this government sliced what we were asking for in half, but i bet its because you have investor senators and congress people that make policy based on their portfolios..

so, while the membership largely isn't happy about the tentative agreement, it will probably pass since the union leadership got their kickbacks.. the whole industry is broken.

Just to point out the obvious... A 24% increase over 5 years isn't going to keep up with an inflation rate that is currently 8%+ a year.

And the rest of us aren't getting 24% or ANY raises. Most will be getting laid off soon and small businesses will be closing. Yay!

im sorry that's your outlook, and the career path that you've chose. i'm a few steps away from leaving the railroad hopefully to become an ironworker. probably not as essential as locomotive engineer, but still in high demand, other than material shortages..

it is the largest wage increase in 40+ years i think i read, but as you said, $120k today, sure isn't what it was in 2016, and i feel as though the last 12 years have been wasted on a thankless profession.

That's pretty much my point on EVERY job category. Not scrutinizing every specific job available in the U.S., as that would be impossible, but just saying that a 24% increase in one negotiation is a HECK of a LARGE increase that I'm sure 99% of jobs would LOVE to get, but sadly NEVER will. Most raises for most people are typically called by most private companies "cost of living increase", which is neither a merit based increase nor anywhere near the actual annual increase in the cost of living. Not even close. 3% is almost a slap in the face.
