I know that ****** sells seperate power cords that can be led directly to 12v. I once wanted to do this as well, but thoughts against it. I don't think that you can just simply cut off the cigarette lighter thing and run it to power, because then you still need a ground. Not sure how the wires are on the inside of that thing.

If your Dad is smart on electrical, perhaps he can look into it.

My STi Driver is currently wired into Aux 4. Took about 15 minutes total.

9500ix is what I use also.

The ****** direct wire is not a pigtail wire (curly)...that's why I would never use the cigarette lighter cord...even if the wiring was not an issue.

The linked cord above is the one with blue lights (there is also a red one). This has the "SmartCord" that integrates lights and the mute button into the plug just like the factory cigarette lighter one. You can mount that to a convenient spot on your dash or console.

If all you want is the direct wire with no additional mute button they've got that too.

I just dove in with a volt meter and found a wire that was under the steering wheel that was ignition switched power. I didn't want to waste a dash switch on something that only needs to be switched with the ignition. If I want it off, I just turn the unit off.

RaptorDDS,

IF, you want the best protection/functionality your radar detector can offer... you should mount it as high up on the windshield to the headliner as you can get it.

I still don't get why anyone would wire it to an AUX switch? Seems like a waste of a switch to me, unless you were just itchin' to use one of your AUX switches? I think that an "InvisiCord" or "MirrorTap" cord direct wiring into the back of the rear view mirror is the best option out there.

Hey, BTW... where/when did you graduate dental school? I graduated UM in 1992.

I graduated UM 1998. I know having it up high would increase it's 'range', but we are sitting pretty high already and when you are driving 90+ I don't know how much that little bit of extra height will add. I think my reaction time from hearing the detector alert to when I slam on the brakes is more important!
