Questions for aluminum-slatted roll-up bed cover owners (Truxedo Sentry/BAK Revolver)

Revolver x4 here - completely satisfied, with a few caveats. First, the overall length of the cover seems to be short. I either have a slight gap at the bulkhead or at the tailgate. Very small amount of water intrusion in the corners. The ends of the rails came raw aluminum - looked horrible especially for the price. I painted them with black automotive touch up paint. Completely silent when rolling and does not flap in the wind either. I live in a cold climate and have only had an issue once with rolling it up in cold/icy conditions (BAK does not recommend this cover in cold climates).

The only thing I'm worried about long-term is the durability of the vinyl top. When I have it rolled up, even for short distances, and roll it back out, I can see lines from the slats underneath. Obviously those go away quickly in the sun but i wonder if it will eventually lead to cracking. I treat the vinyl with 303 Aerospace Protectant to cut down on UV damage.

Do they make noise with all the interlinking metal parts, either in closed or rolled up position? On-road or off? I can't stand rattles and will just go with a soft cover if that's an issue. Gen2s are too dang quiet.

I have not noticed any noise rolled up or in the closed position. I had it closed the few times Ive gone off road (Dunes and trails) and no rattling or anything. I doubt you'd get any rattling. The way it closes is snug against the rails and its rubber that contacts those points.

Can the tailgate be opened/closed freely with the covers in place? If not, can the cover be damaged if someone tries to?

The tailgate cannot be closed freely with the cover down. One negative of this one. It can be opened. I have closed the tailgate with it down a few times and it basically just bunches up the rubber cover part. No damage and I dont think it could damage it that way. The only overhang is a rubber "flap" to keep water out.

Just generally speaking, are you happy with these things? And how have they aged over time, especially if you park outside?

So far very happy with mine. I really like the look with convertible type canvas material instead of vinyl. It looks nicer to me. Ive had mine about 8 months and park outside 100% of the time in Seattle area. No issues with aging or wear or anything.

One reason I got a hard rolling cover is so I can put my mountain bike in the back laid down and close it and lock it. I feel comfortable leaving it in there. I also wanted to be able to see out the back window when its rolled up.

I have the Truxedo Sentry CT and like it a lot because you can easily remove the cover part quickly without any tools by sliding two latches in the front and lifting. It is fairly heavy to lift by yourself though. Never heard any rattles coming from it either.

My only issue is that with the Sentry CT is you can't freely close your tailgate because the seal interferes with it and you have unlatch and slightly lift the cover to close the tailgate.

I had the now discontinued Truxedo Titanium, which was replaced by the Sentry CT, and you were able to freely close the tailgate with that one.

I have a Retrax Pro in Matte Black. The install was psretty straightforward and quick. I have had zero issues in the 28k miles since I installed it. It has been through many automaded touch and touchless car washes and only once or twice did I ever notice any slight amount of water near the tailgate. I like the Retrax Pro because you can hold back the cover at any spot youd like allong the tracks rather than the two to three set locations from other companies. The matte black also matches well with the other like parts on my truck.

I'm considering a Truxedo Sentry CT or BAK Revolver X4. (Not sure if there's any other "hard" roll ups).

Something that rolls up/stows out of way is critical for me....tri-fold covers aren't an option as they'd require being folded up against the window when hauling mountain bikes over a tailgate pad, which happens a lot. Also I like the fact that the whole thing can be removed quickly (without tools on the Sentry).

Had a few questions...

• Just generally speaking, are you happy with these things? Yes, it keeps the bed drier that I expected! And how have they aged over time, especially if you park outside? I had the X4 installed 2 Days after leaving the dealer and it sleeps outside. I have no complaints. It does its job and looks great! 20K miles so far!

I too own the Truxedo Sentry CT. I love it. It keeps my bed dry, much drier than my older Access cover on my Tundra. As mentioned, the only negative is closing. When closing, it's best to close the tailgate first then role the CT last. This is because of the rubber seal on the end of the CT will get caught in the tailgate. IMO, this is the only negative however, small with all the other positives.

Pace Edwards full electric roll back. Best cover period. Also one of the most expensive. But it looks amazing. Super sturdy. And it opens and closes with the press of a button. You have a 70k+ truck. Don’t go cheap on a bed cover. The Pace Edwards will run about $2500.

Another extremely satisfied X4 owner. As others have stated: quiet, the bed stays dry, nice hard surface, low-profile, the tailgate opens and closes independently, the opening cables are easy for my wife to use.

Ive had a Bak Revolver X4 for 17k miles. I live in Central Florida and park outside. It doesn't rattle, the color has held, all of the mechanical pieces still work well, and outside of a few adjustments due to riding over rough terrain, it has been exactly what i wanted. The only minor grip i have is that the flat black material is a little harder to clean due to the texture but some soap, water, and elbow grease always does the job.
