I am diggin the posts keep em coming

Netix - did you ever recover your ATV(s)?

Building a fire in front of a snow cave - interesting - and it doesn't melt the entrance? I think I saw Bear Gryles do that, he just flat out amazes me.

I have done quite a bit of high adventure backpacking as well as 4WD camping in the desert. Camping in the snow is challenging, everything is more difficult. Camping in high sustained winds presents its own set of challenges. I have been high on mountain ridges and have lightning explode above me - time to check the old underwear moment. All with my sons, great bonding moments. One time a couple years ago we were caught in a flash downpour, Philmount, NM. we were just setting up camp, and got submerged - it was in August!

All these events I have experienced and those I read about just drive me to prepare.

One day last year, my 17 year old (at the time) said "Dad, you are just lucky that you are successful in starting your own business" First I was really mad, then I shared with him the plaque My dad kept on his desk that read: Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
Seneca
Roman dramatist, philosopher, & politician (5 BC - 65 AD)

So I guess I am lucky!

Thanks again for the great write-up Gordon!

I took my Hi-Lift out when I got the floor jack race set-up... the Hi-Lift is going back in! As well as new tow straps, a better shovel (probably that All-In-One kit) and a few other tools... maybe a machete too! haha

Don't forget a good pair of gloves and a decent saw, I ordered a Bahco 8" folding saw under the Snap On brand for $18. All in one kit came in today, very compact and well made.
I think a machete would be good for snapping the dead branches...

Get a mini(?) chainsaw:superhack:
hehe!!

Ya know, I was looking at them last night! The smallest I found was a 14" for a gas powered model. Refurb for about $80. Its not the money, I simply don't think I have the room for it - a good place to keep it from bouncing around.

Would be good for doing some trail maintenance, that patch thru Carrizzo Gorge needs it.

I wouldn't mind leading an expedition to help clear it up, looking at about 2 hours work. That run thru the wash afterwards was an absolute blast, breaking up all that curled up mud.

Wanna Come?

I would love too, but I don't think I can make that 2500 mile journey by this weekend. Damn, I need to start looking for a job in the Southwest; you guys/gals are having way too much fun without me.

Great thread guys, and a true testimate to why you should carry all that gear. Hopefully you never need it, but when you do some of the right tools and ingenuity and dirty work will get you out.

A+ thread

Yeah, I think we should make a trip like that leaving LATE in the afternoon... do the work when it's like 5-6PM giving us like 2-3 hours of daylight. Then camp at that cool spot you showed me! :)
