The key to any extended warranty is to find out what is excluded. They will promote a mile long list of what is covered but the important part is what isn't covered.

It is worth noting that many times extended warranties are much more expensive if you wait till the end of your factory warranty period vs buying it when it's new. I encountered this with my Mercury outboards earlier this year, as the plan went up a thousand dollars compared to when I was quoted the year before. A real bummer... so take it for what it may be worth or not - my lesson learned was that you buy extended warranties early if you're going to do it.

does anyone know what the time vs. refund on these plans are? is it per dealer discretion or does ford mandate / have some scientific ratio they use to refund them?

Your extended Ford warranties are prorated and will be refunded to you if you trade your vehicle to Ford. If you sell it outright the extended warranty will continue. It doesn't matter how much you use it.
