Changed my oil just prior (500 miles) to leaving for the SDBR. The trip was about 2600 miles. When I checked the oil life it said 53% left. My question is, does this sound typical?
I know opinions vary a lot regarding time between oil changes and I will change it soon now anyway because of the hard driving on the trip. That is probably unnecessary also but, hey better safe than sorry. I just thought I would see what thoughts you guys had on whether or not this oil life sounded typical. Thanks for the input.

Should add that I changed the truck to Amsoil prior to the trip. Confused the service department when I took that in to have the free oil change done. Could not wrap their minds around somebody buying oil and bringing it in when they would provide it for free. I just told them it is better than what they have and it is my truck end of story.

Thanks, having 47% of the oil life gone seemed a little high from what I have seen so far with this truck. Limited sample size though since I just got it in January.

I have found that if I really hammer it- lots of full throttle, 4,000 rpm- running up Pea Vine mountian (It's the local version of Pikes Peak) my oil life can be reduced by about 50%. This last service only lasted about 2K miles before it said oil change was due. But I had a lot of visitors, so I spent a lot of time giving thrilling rides up the hill.

Where if all I do is on road it will usually give me 7K miles between changes.
My wifes '11 FX4 let it go to 12K miles before it said it was due. Way to far for me, but I wanted to see just how far it would go.

The harder you run your truck, during events, etc, the more the internal algorithm in the PCM deducts from the oil life monitor. Often, with AMSOIL, folks reset the monitor and keep on truckin'. That being said, anyone making the change to AMSOIL for the first time (or ANY full synthetic that they have never used before) should, if considering extended intervals, utilize used oil analysis at least for the first two services after the change. I say this because even though all Raptors are suppose to be the same (except for the 5.4L's), all vehicles, owner's driving styles, driving conditions, environments and all of that affects the oil life and thus everyone will get different results. But by using oil analysis to help determine your service interval, it takes the guesswork out of it all.

I give this advice in full knowledge that AMSOIL warrants their Signature Series 5w-20 for up to 25K miles or one year in normal driving conditions and up to 15K miles or one year in severe duty conditions when used with their EA Oil filters. However, I HAVE seen engines that would burn up the best oils, so never take ANYTHING for granted.

If you do not want to use oil analysis, I would say that with a cycle/interval that includes an event where you drive harder than normal, off road, etc. It would be a good idea to keep your intervals somewhere between 5-7500 miles. I have only seen one engine out of all the testing that I have done that would burn the oil up or harm it within that range and that was a POS Kia Sportage.

Anyone wanting to know more about oil analysis test kits can hit me up in private message and I will fill you in on the details/cost.

Hope this helps a little...

That info helps quite a bit.
I had to be blunt with the service department regarding my use of Amsoil. They tried to tell me any engine damage wouldn't be covered unless I used Motorcraft oil. I told them politely they were wrong and no way would putting a better product in be harmful. They saw the light eventually.

While I like how you handled it, technically IF something were to happen to the internal engine parts during the period that they offered the free servicing including oil, they could deny coverage for. The Magnusson act is written in such a way so that any manufacturer that wants to require their brand of oil can do so, if they provide the product that they require for free to the customer for however long the warranty or covered service period is. It is a fine line that if fought in court with the right lawyers, they would win. But it sounds like they would rather have you as a loyal customer than to **** you off about the oil. In the end, it is all a marketing type of thing. They want to get sales of motocraft up and you really can't blame them, AMSOIL and others are kicking their butts.

Funny part is my "free" oil change cost me the labor since I used the Amsoil. That issue got settled too. Salesman explained it to service manager. Told him to think about it or when owner got back later in the week he would decide. Service is guy is ok, he saw it my way upon reflection without help.
He also agreed that if we had a problem they would back me if Ford had any issue. Really nice dealing with these guys. They know I will be back and that the way I view it I bought the truck from them and it is their responsibility to get paid from Ford. I know some will take issue with that but, this dealer has been loyal to me just as I have been to them.

Yep, the service department makes it a keeper then. It is nice to know they didn't try to stick with the void your warranty scare tactic. they know full well that the AMSOIL isn't going to hurt anything. Sounds like they have a conscience.
