Now my engine is clean enough to eat off of, hopefully not by the rats this time

Hide these chunks around where you park and in the engine bay. They feel like wax cakes and are pretty hard. They have almost no smell and are not greasy. The "Bucket of Death" works well. Try not to put them where chippers and squirrels can get to them, unless you want to get rid of them too. I put them in a half dozen places in my garage every fall and they work great. You get a shit ton for $22.

I like all these ideas. The rat bait looks like I could run a ziptie through it and mount a few inside the engine bay. The cost is worth it for not dealing with a chewed harness again.

Yeah, sealed garage isn’t so sealed for rodents. They’re quite adept at squeezing in; I’ve got the chewed bike harness to prove it.

And if you go the cat route, you need a mouser, not a house cat.
It's the roll up door bottom seal corner when they get most of the time. I have a trap at each corner.

I seal the walls to the floor with a 1" thick PVC baseboard set in a huge bead of urethane caulk.

Check every pentration into the building. Gas line, A/C line, power, data...

Most cats are straight up killers. Ours will take out birds on the regular. My friend has some that kill everything that moves on his property. Moles, mice, voles, birds- it's a daily slaughter. They don't de-claw cats anymore.

Had same problem several years ago...chewed the hood seal, battery insulation and one wire, forget which one, electric wire which made truck have bad miss...Live in country and truck is in shop..nothing will keep them out..unless your shop is in a bubble...
So..my solution...mouse blocks around shop,AND under truck engine and by tires..also a trap under the engine...But..i caught him by putting a trap on the battery...and also doesnt hurt to wire a few mouse blocks (they sell with holes in them)in the engine compartment. So did i solve the problem...so far yes in truck..and still catch a few in traps in shop and do see blocks chewed on...its ongoing for most and you just have to keep on it...Also spraying frabric softner around engine..dont know if that works but i got best smelling Raptor in town...
I had them totally destroy my older BMW years ago that was parked outside,so always tried to stay on top of it..if you dont, they find their path in and then go invite the whole family...Have lots thousands of dollars in damage till i started to stay on top of it.

Mice don’t like light. It would be a hassle but a light in the engine bay would keep them out. I know a guy who opens his hood and keeps a clip on light on all night, in his garage. That has solved his mice problem. There’s probably a portable battery powered light that would work for outdoors although it would be a hassle. Maybe even a 12 volt light? I’m looking for one.
