Need some advices for my off road gear

It's great that you should carry a complete tie rod assembly, as I have experienced a replacement in the field before in our Raptor group. Just remember to bring a large enough wrench to remove the tie rod from the steering rack.... Even an aluminum pipe wrench would be handy for this.

Hello Offroaders !

So i've been digging into the "Builiding an Off Road tool box" and found many useful infos in it, but I wanted to do a little summary of what I would need as gear/spare parts...

Quick story, I bought my "13 Raptor like 6-8 months ago and I'm planning a long trip to Morocco in October with a friend who have a Raptor too, around 2000 miles trough sand beaches, rocky trails and the Sahara Desert.
So we need to get prepared real good cuz I will not find any ******g help when I will be down there...

What's I already have :

- ARB Compressor (CKMTA 12) mounted under the hood with inflate/Deflate and tubeless quick fix kits
- 2 spare wheels
- All basic tools necessary
- First Aid kit
- Sand plates (wish me luck I don't have to use it !!)

What I'm planning to buy for recovery gear :

- SDHQ Off Road jack
- SDHQ ABS & Vacuum guards
- SDHQ quick CV boot fix
- 2 x Bubba Rope kinetic strap (7/8" x 20' is enough ?)
- 2 or 4Gator Jaw soft shackle
- 25' long chain

Is there any interest to buy some standard heavy duty strap and steel shackles as the modern kinectic ropes and soft shackles seem to work way better and safer ?!


Spare parts I would need :

- 1 or 2 IWEs
- Tie Rods : I'm a bit confused, what do I need, Inner end, Outer end, both ??
- Wheel speed sensor : again a bit confused, I saw they were side specific, do i really need to buy 4 sensors ?!


Misc. : Zip Ties, Tape, Vacuum tubing, Ratchet straps and Bungee cords to get everything tied down...

And as a bonus, a full RPG off Road Stage 4+...Who said "In your dreams !" ? :crazy:

That is an excellent start. I'm looking forward to hearing about your trip.

Since you have two trucks going, you'll be able to split up the gear and spare parts.

Preparing the truck:
Be sure all of your fluids are topped off and changed if need to be. You may want to add an extra power steering cooler and reservoir.
I'd bring spare fluids as well.
Radiator coolant
Transmission oil
Gear oil

As for spare parts:
I would take a total of two or three IWE.
May want to consider a power steering pump. (If you think you could change one in the trail. It's not a necessity, but steering in sand would be difficult.)
A whole tie rod assembly (string or tape measure for setting your alignment after the change out).
I'm not sure on the wheel speed sensors. Maybe @treypal can speak to them.

Recovery gear:
I would go with a 1" snatch rope, 30' long.
If you bring a chain, bring a way to attach it to the truck. Hooks or clevis.
For sand recovery, you may need an anchor point. I'd consider adding something like the Pull Pal.
And I'd consider adding a winch. They can be mounted into the truck very easily.

Other items to discuss; where are you staying, camping? Hotel? How will the gear be secured in the truck?

Are you packing food? Coolers? Or ARB fridge?

Sounds like a really neat trip you're planning.

@The Car Stereo Company indeed I will carry a tank of fresh water and especially a lot of spare fuel, the equivalent of the stock fuel tank in jerrycans, so i can satisfy the thirst of my throaty V8 !

@Yukon Joe I was thinking of the steering pump but it seems hard to change in the trail isn't it ? I forgot to say i will surely upgrade my PS reservoir to the aluminium RPG one, hope it will be enough so I dont burn a pump in the middle of nowhere...

And for the food/fuel/camping, we'r not going alone to the desert, I found a serious local guide who's in charge of the logistic so we could focus on what we want : rip some trails, relax, repeat !
I'm currently finalizing our route, waypoints and hotel/bivouac spots...

Could someone give me the ref numbers for the tie rod assembly, can't find the OEM ref numbers...

As for the wheel speed sensors, any clue ?

Hi guys,

Some news about my quest for the mighty spare parts...

Finally found the ref numbers for Tie Rods (Inner & Outer) :

Inner Tie Rod (LH or RH) : Ford part number #3280 or MotorCraft #MEOE-144
Outer Tie Rof (LH or RH) : Ford part number #3A130 or MotorCraft # MEOE-145

I'm still looking for infos about the wheel speen sensors, can't confirm if they are really side specific, or if that's just a difference in wire lenght depending on the side (?).

Wouldn't hurt to carry a spare serpentine belt. I've seen one fail on a run, luckily someone had a spare to get him going. I always carry an extra since then.

I thought of that last night. I meant to include it in my original post.

One belt between two Raptors will be sufficient.
