For those of us with SYNC, a mini USB cable is a "must-have" item as it will enable you to charge up any device with a mini USB port.

They're also available in retractable versions:

If I had a dollar for every time I've been asked if I have a mini USB cable I'd probably have five bucks by now :D

It's a good item to keep in the center console.

I don't know about an I-Pod, but my wife used her Droid to play a media stream over the USB Audio and it enabled her to charge her phone as well with the use of the cable. Pretty cool.

If your iPod has a mini-USB port then it's not an iPod.

Cool to know the Droid functions through the stereo FSM.

Power!

Another "Must-Have" item for the Raptor (especially if you're a camper) is a Power Inverter.

Everyone uses some kind of electronic gadget while in their motor-home, SUV or car. You might listen to your MP3 player, check for directions on your global positioning system (GPS) or play a portable video game. These types of electronic devices can be recharged or powered by plugging them into the cigarette lighter (or power port) in your vehicle.

But what if you want to use something a little more elaborate while you're on the open road? Maybe you want to make toast, watch an LCD TV, or perhaps even write an article on your laptop computer. These devices plug into regular wall outlets, not cigarette lighters. Making sure your electronic gear gets the juice it needs while on the road isn't a simple matter of finding the right adapter. You need a power inverter.

Power inverters convert direct current (DC), the power that comes from a car battery, into alternating current (AC), the kind of power supplied to your home and the power larger electronics need to function.

An inverter increases the DC voltage, and then changes it to alternating current before sending it out to power a device. These devices were initially designed to do the opposite -- to convert alternating current into direct current. Since these converters could basically be run in reverse to accomplish the opposite effect, they were called inverters.

A power inverter harnesses your vehicle's battery to efficiently power office equipment on the road. They vary in output - here's info about one from TrippLite:

Continuously supplies up to 375 watts of 120V AC power to 2 AC outlets from any 12V battery or automotive DC source. Convenient cigarette lighter DC input jack with 3-ft. cable provides 1-step installation. Portable and compact, the inverter's design is among the most rugged available thanks to its lightweight metal casing.

Consider what your power requirements are and then look at the output of the inverters. Some electrical devices will require higher output and depending on the application, you may want to consider adding an additional 12v battery.

Yup an inverter is a good call. Definitely choose one that fits your needs. In my case, I got one with cig lighter adapter and claws; I wanted to be able to use it in the cab and under the hood.

And regarding those retractable USB cables... you're going to find that some work for charging, and some don't. Some don't contain the correct wires to enable charging, and of course they don't tell you that on the package. Just make sure you try it out before you need to count on it.

When shopping for inverters, also make sure you look at efficiency.

When I went to Fry's (a large electronics store on the west coast and some other states) there are several models from various manufacturer's.

Looking at two 400 watt inverters (you only get that when you connect it directly to the battery) one had an efficiency of 87% and the other 90%.

Anything connected thru the cigarette lighter is gonna provide 150-180 watts regardless of the power rating it claims. So don't go out and get a 1750 watt inverter thinking you are going to be able to make caramel machiatto's inside the Raptor via inverter connected to cigar lighter. LOL

I bought the higher efficiency unit. It also had a higher "maximum power" rating too, which tells me the unit is built better. Had a 1 yr warranty vs. the lesser model no warranty stated.
