I never owned a moon roof before, even more so on a Truck. (Ex; I had a Bikini Top w/Clear square on my CJ5). And always felt they were an expensive option and rather preferred having a solid roof in case I rolled over or skidded upside down. I finally started to enjoy my NOS Raptor in California in Huntington Beach when the track started to squeal and crack and pieces of plastic breaking off !!! So I went back to the dealership after my trip and explain my nightmare. Long story short, service advisor said that this happens because of lack of use and that no parts kits or individual pieces (POS) are available for repair or replacement. Only the entire unit has to be removed and replacement costs in excess of $4K!!!!

Has this happened(s) often and or is this a common issue?

I need more options!!!

Had the exact same thing happen. Had the exact same explanation (I don't remember what the cost would have been, but it was a lot). Luckily mine was covered under warranty at the time. I'm super paranoid about it now. But your story is consistent with my experience. Sorry.

I had mine break on my old scab raptor a few years ago. I ordered the replacement track kit from sunroof doctor and replaced it myself one afternoon. If you dont use it the track may stick and the cheap plastic parts in it may break. The kit was just over $100. I remember I needed a pop rivet gun during install.

My Moonroof tracks bit the dust 2 times on My 2010 . Month after that my rear slider broke the tab off . Extended warranty covered everything. I unplugged the connector at the switches so i never use them now. Tech said what more than likely happened on rear slider is, i closed it tight in winter time and didn't use it . When intense summer temps hit . Window expanded and broke tab off window. He said that goes for side windows also. He said roll them up tight then bump them down a 1/8 inch to allow for expansion. other wise it will snap plastic on window regulator. Make sense so i do that now on all my vehicles.

Moonroof is just poor cheap design.

Thanks for this, I'll remember it. We don't get too cold here but sometimes we have spikes. Same for summer.

Moon roof broke in my 13 SCrew about two months ago. Was at the dunes watching others rip around from the parking lot, put sun roof open, click click bang. Done. So I'll be doing this soon too. Rear window is still good but I use it a lot for my GSD. Unfortunately not covered under either warranty I have according to Ford and Easy Care. :(

Happened to my 13 SCREW. I didn't use the sunroof too frequent and then one time I was closing it I heard some snap. I looked and the glass was not fully closed. I tried to just tap the switch to fully close and the damn thing opened and was done. Wouldn't close. A big storm was in the forecast so I started to panic, I called the dealership and they were like and,,,, what do you want us to do about it. It was a Friday and they told me they don't work on sunroofs during the weekend. I dropped it off anyway and a week later it was finally covered under warranty.

Thanks for the info and post...I had also found this while searching around in a forum online, it’s was a few years old so I wanted to check them out before I posted their link , etc. Safe to say that I spoke to the owner today and he was very helpful and explained in detail vital tips etc. I will be ordering their kit.

+1 for Sunroof Dr. kit.
Had to do it on my 13 SCREW after it was about 4 years old. Slider tabs on the window carriers were broke and window jammed in open position.

So that was summer of 2017.
It’s been 2 years now and no leaks or other Sunroof issues. I try to exercise it once a week since non-use seems to be the issue with these.

I followed all the Dr.s directions on the materials for re assembly and no issues.

It took me about a day to complete taking my time.

Once the interior parts were out. I took a big moving blanket to cover the dash, remaining seat ect. It helped prevent scuffing the interior when you get the headliner and track assembly’s out.

I also now carry a role of gorrilla tape and heavy duty piece of plastic drop cloth. Incase it brakes again And I need to fashion a Sunroof cover to get home in the rain.
