You should really read the owners manual page you posted. 87 octane is the minimum octane and not the one recommend for best overall engine performance (91+). The engine performance you see on paper is not with 87 octane. This has been discussed many times before on this forum. When you Run 87 octane in these trucks it makes them pull timing in very significant ways, the engine will perform poorly, and you will not gain any fuel economy. You are not really saving money by using the minimum octane rating. You are far more likely to find yourself getting fewer mile per gallon and risking additional ware on systems that are designed for different performance characteristics. When you run 87 octane on these trucks you are waiting for the computer to figure out how to pull the timings so that you don't have engine knocks, pre-detnation, etc.

Well, a few things. If you're happy with a down powered engine, good on you, but that's not the context here. You aren't missing anything to save money. Reading the OP's first post he obviously was NOT happy with his down powered engine. He traded a bit of gas money for enjoyment of his vehicle. Is that worth it? Not to me. And, again reading the OP's first paragraph, not worth it to him either.

That out of the way, I don't pay attention because I don't need to, and nothing to do with net worth. You can have a high net worth and lousy free cash flow, somebody who's wealth is locked up in real estate as an example, especially if their primary residence is a big chunk of that. So, I'd stick with a sports car, say a C8, and ability to feed it without worry instead of being a financially nervous Lambo guy, keep more cash flow, and not lock up so much of my net worth in a car I have to be concerned if I can afford to drive. A solid example of financial freedom over net worth thinking.

I just understand the difference between being able to afford to buy something and being able to afford to own something. Combine that with the ability to live well within my means in an area with a low cost of living. I realize people talk themselves in to 'stretching' and lose the freedom to not count nickles and dimes because of that, but it's not me and it's not a lifestyle I "get". I know I can die today, I've no time to worry about gas prices at the expense of enjoying what I've bought.

Which is the point: IF you aren't enjoying it, WHY did you buy it?

Well said! Every vehicle I drive requires 93 for peak performance and I like it that way.

However, I do still bitch about the price of gas because it is purposefully driven up by the morons in the White House.

The petroleum product market has many small drivers that affect the price per barrel, but it is mainly a speculative market. When the govt obviously tries to kill your business/product, the price goes up as long as the people allow the govt to act stupid.

Did you happen to notice the reduction in mileage? I be tried this twice, once in the 19 and in my 21. Both times the MPG drops 1-1.5. That extra dollar per gallon for premium is worth it.

I've been using nothing but ethanol free 91 octane in everything I own since our first raptor in 2013. I believe it's just better for everything in general. Yeah, it's more expensive and I do care about mileage. So I slow down, shut my truck off if I'm stopping for road construction or running into a gas station for coffee or whatever and I've managed to bump my mpg's to between 19 and 20. But I know if I need power for a bad passing decision, it's there. Just my 2 cents.

The only people who are not worried about the price of gas, are our government officials who don't pay for it.
I’m not worried about gas, saving $70-140 on a road trip… doesn’t matter

Ethanol has a higher octane rating, just saying

I agree and run 92 in both of our vehicles all the time. My point was more of an overall not caring about gas prices. The people who make the laws are not spending their money on fuel. So they don't care about how high it is per gallon/liter. If they did, they would do everything in their tool box to lower it.

Sometimes. It depends on the price. If you get 20mpg on premium and 18mpg on regular, you lose 10%. I’d be surprised if it was that much, but it’s just an example. If regular costs $5 and premium costs $6, that’s 20% more cost. In this case it’s costs less per mile to buy regular.

Good grief - 10 minus 5 seconds until this becomes a gas mileage and is Costco gas better or Sunoco?

I could care less what the manual says - I'm using 93. And I would have sold the raptor if I cared that much about gas. Get a motorcycle license and start riding asap folks, if that is the case, which I do lol :)
