I have been looking for a Gen 1 Raptor for a little while. I found this 2012 Raptor with 112K miles on it. I am going to look at it tomorrow. It is at a dealership so I don't know how much information they will have but when I looked up the air intake that is on it JTL it says it requires an Engine Tune. My question is does anyone know anything about what type of engine tune it would require? Should I be worried about it or are their things that I should be looking for when I go look at it? One of my biggest concerns would be does the tune require it to have Premium Gas or is Regular Gas still ok?

Usually, if it’s just a cold air intake installed, it will not need a tune for the engine. But if they’re saying, it needs a tune, ask them if it is coming with a handheld tuner from the previous owner if not, they may be able to reprogram back to stock for you. Do a good once over on the vehicle when you look at it and don’t rely on them for information on the condition. I would have it checked out by a mechanic if you can of your own choice just to verify it’s still running well.

That's what I thought. I just happened to look up the cold air intake to see if it was a decent one or not but this one very specifically states to not drive the truck until it has been tuned. It's not at a Ford Dealership so I don't think they would even be able to flash it back to stock nor would I want to do that without changing the air intake back. I am fine with leaving the air intake. It's more of question about the tune if I don't have the tuner. If there is way to see what tune it has.

Doesn't look any different than any other CAI to me. I can't see how running it without a tune would harm anything. I think JLT is just trying to over-cover themselves from any liability, which I can't see there being a problem.

Thanks, I don't see any difference either. If I do get it I might take it to the local ford dealership and see if they can check the ecu and flash it back to stock if needed and I can retune it if needed. I called and talked to JLT and they said they have this one which requires a tune and their sister company S&B Filters has one that doesn't require a tune. I guess I will find out tomorrow.

Run. That very reliable 6.2l motor right out of the box, already has 400+hp. It's the standard engine on much heavier F-250's; proven by the many millions of towing and heavy cargo miles. (The payload is around 2800lbs, with a 7 ton towing capacity).

For the price tag of that mod the owner could have had the trans flushed by a shop, (which most original owners neglect). The 6.2 motor needs additional Torque more than hp, but that intake will never add enough to notice.

Thanks, the reliability of the 6.2L is why I am looking at it. The extra mods done to it I don't particular care about. Just want to make sure I know what I am getting. Gen 1 Raptors are hard to find around here and when they do come up they don't last long. This is one is 3 hours away.

I agree with this looking at the picture. It doesn’t look like there’s anything special about the cold air intake.

It’s just a CAI like others have said, I told 5 star I have a SBT CAI and they said it didn’t matter for the tune but when data logging is done they may notice some differences in some stuff vs stock , I can’t remember what but it made no difference truly. Where are you located ?

I’d see what those shocks look like, when they were last rebuilt/replaced. That’s a negotiating tool. It’s not a well they look fine, it’s part of the maintenance for the truck. Every 10k-50k miles , so 2 times it should’ve been done.

Fuse 27 relocation done is a must

Recall from ford on transmission reflash for downshift from 6th gear to 1st,I think lead frame recall also but not positive on 2012.

Spark plugs replaced at 100k? That’s gotta be done and isn’t cheap 16 of them bad boys , boots and plugs may need replacing if any issues.

Service history matters, see if you can get that also.

Rust on rockers if it has a moonroof and make sure to read up on servicing that if it does have a moonroof.

Get it up on a lift check for leaks….start it up from cold. See if exhaust manifold is leaking. Studs break on these suckers, just had passenger side done.
