LED Headlights

Guys,



So I'm wondering. Why are there no LED based headlight options out there?


I have a Jeep buddy, and he scored a pair for fairly cheap that throw great light and are instant on like other LEDs.

I mean, in the past, output might have been an option. Also, aiming might have been a problem in the past, but now I can't imagine it's an issue.


So what are your thoughts? Why no LED headlights? Would you buy a pair over an HID upgrade (if you're pre 2012)?

I am seeing LED Headlamps from GE and other manufacturers. Just none for the F150 yet. Maybe they are coming.

I'm still interested in people's thoughts.

not many manufacturers have had led headlights pass DOT. they will be around eventually, but led technology is still improving every day. i highly doubt an aftermarket company has a DOT approved led headlight. audi is the only company i know of so far, but i could be wrong.

I have seen them in a few imports, the aftermarket has DOT approved headlights such as TruckLite and Speaker headlights and they work amazingly well.

Buddy of mine has them in his Jeep as well, for the cost and output they are quite nice. Would be interesting to see if something comes available, but I am happy with the HID upgrade.

I have a few things in regards to LED headlights in the works. We've actually been working on it for the last 6 months. We should have a working prototype finished in the next few months and hopefully within a year be in full production. Not going to say much more, or start a game changer thread and make everyone wait several months, lol but these will be some serious high performance heads and look like something from the future, hahaha.

The trick is doing the testing and passing DOT which is the only way I will roll. Had the JW Speaker lights on my Jeep and the Hella HID's that are on there now beat the hell out of them.

LED is clearly the way of the future in lighting.

The busses in town are running led heads as well as the new Harley's I've been seeing... What I predict is an issue for us in the snow as the led doesn't throw enough heat to keep the snow and ice off the lens. I don't think the buss ppl have thought this through. I touched one a few months ago and the light was cold. It was a summer day..

Our street lights are also led and same issue. They ice up in the snow then drop a massive chunk of ice on your car... Surprise!

Yeah definitely the biggest issue for our climate, you definitely need to clean them off every time you go out in the winter.
