Just how much does behind the grill light mount reduce light output?

Not a Gen 3, but I didn’t have a behind the grill option like I did with my Gen 1 Roush due to some performance upgrades which included a Cobb front (grill, vs bumper) mount intercooler taking up room.

The 40” OnX6 arc worked out quite well. I had to fab up some brackets but it wasn’t too bad. The light output is unreal.

I installed a pair of Diode Dynamics SSC2’s in the outer bumper cavities on my Gen 2 and added aftermarket “grill fill covers’ over the holes. Drove at night with and without the covers and couldn’t tell any difference in lighting before or after. The side benefit of stealthy looks and to a smaller extent rock protection was worth it. Btw, the SSC2’s are great little lights, I use them for DRLs and to augment the low beam OEM headlights..light em up!!!

We have had a number of FRF over the years opening up 'running hot' or 'overheating' threads on their... <cough> "bone stock trucks" while towing. Subsequent pictures showed all manner of lighting obstructions. IIRC, a few were running the FMIC as well and of course, that can't have anything to do with the overheating if it was the last mod. Ditto the lighting that blocks airflow. If it was the last mod, it POSITIVELY was not responsible for the overheating.

I also don't recall ever hearing back on the resolution of these threads :-/
Heavy towing or high rpm, low speed + airflow restriction ~= running higher than usual operating temps.

But, for most use cases, you probably won't notice.
Mine was a coincendence of an issue with my thermostat after the cam phaser work.

Never had a problem with my light bar behind my grill on my Gen 2...

Im looking at forward lighting, and very much leaning towards the ONX6+ mounted behind the grill. Im wondering just how much the light output is reduced by the grill. Obviously there is still plenty of light being thrown forward, but are we talking a 10% reduction, or closer to 50% reduction? It ends up changing my thinking, as I am willing to sacrifice some output for being behind the grill, but at some point, Ill just go for an exposed bumper mount.
I have worked with several customers on these types of behind-the-grille builds and have never had someone report back that they were unhappy with it. I know several of them have even posted on this forum with their pics and experience, too. Yes, you'll lose some light to the grille, but if you are running powerful lights (ie Baja Designs), you likely won't miss that light in real time while you're using them.

Give me a call or text me and I would be happy to run through options, answer your questions, and get you set up with some discounts. I can custom create pretty much any light kit you want, so you aren't beholden to the same kits that are everywhere, either.
We also have a patented plug-and-play wiring system that will make your install a breeze.

My direct line for calls and texts is (317) 934-6778.
I hope to get to work with you on your lighting project soon!

Thanks!
