GEN 2 It sounds like a gnome slapping a tape measure around under there.

The tires were rotated about 2000 miles back. They're practically new. Maybe have 3,000 miles on them. I had them rotated with the oil change/cam phaser service.

Couldn't find the gnome to take the tape from him. Hopefully he will be easier to locate during daylight hours.

I'll check the fender liners in the morning.


The sound was like I ran over thin pieces of metal but there was nothing in the road to hit. That's where the sheetrock corner bead thought came from. Same with the tape measure sound. It lasted maybe a second or so but was loud enough to certainly get my attention, and the attention of everyone else in the truck. I've never heard a sound like that come from a vehicle.


I'm not real sure what tags in underwear has to do with this. But, no tags. Hate them things.

I've yet to find anything that looks or feels wrong. I'll continue to listen for anything else that seems off.

I'll ask them to check to see if it's the IWE and not a gnome. I'm really hoping it's a gnome. I could train him to do all kinds of cool stuff.

IWE. If it's a metal sounding noise from under the driver, that goes away after you let up on the gas, it's likely the vacuum check valve. It's about a $9 part. I had this repaired on a 2020 Raptor after 26 miles. There's a TSB 19-2252. I took mine in, and after the fix, no more noise. You can test by putting your truck into 4x4A mode. This will make the sound go away. It's an extremely common issue, so your dealer will likely have the part in stock.

Yup, I forgot about this in the opening responses. quick and dirty way to rule this in or out is retest in 4a instead of 2h.

No... you’re really not. They’re a PITA and practically untrainable. Not to mention they smell like wet dog when they’re clean and worse when they’re not. Which is a lot. There’s a reason they’re banished to the garden to be garden gnomes.

I vote for the heat shield theory. Had a similar sound from the rear. Heat shield was vibrating against tailpipe.
