Friday I was talking to some former and current Ford guys. We were talking about exhaust designs and what looked the best. They mentioned something interesting about the Lighting exhaust.

I guess Ford stopped using Lighting style exhaust because in cold climates it was causing break issues on trucks. In cold climates, with the exhaust in front of the wheels, the moisture in the exhaust would condensate and collect on the rear tire and brake system, causing the issues.

Now this does not mean this will happen on a Raptor or with aftermarket exhausts. Aerodynamics, engine type, and other factors will certainly play a part, but I thought I would share.

It's also very hard to make that style exhaust and keep the NVH levels in the acceptable range.

If the condensation were a legitimate factor, don't you think you'd see some of the same effects when it rains, regardless of exhaust style?

Ford used the "lightning" style exhaust on non lightning model f150s during the same era. It caused excessive corrosion on the wheel.

Never any issues on my lighting and the normal f150s for 3/4 of the first year run 97 New body style had that exhaust factory. My dad's 97 has had the steeda side exhaust , which is rare as steeda didn't make it very long, for 15 years and no issues in Chicago year round driving
