So some have a custom tune and other have a canned tune?:confused:

Yes. I only run custom tunes and there are only 2 people that I trust to tune my vehicles. Last 2 times I had a canned tune in one of my cars, 1 of them ran lean, the other had a shit idle (jumping 500rpm) and ran rich. The first one I never noticed until I did a dyno day with a Mustang club. Second one lasted 5 minutes before I had a custom tune done by the shop. They still did a shit job and I had one of my 2 trusted tuners create a new tune for it.

Custom tune: Your vehicle goes to a reputable tuner with a dyno and the tuner creates a custom tune for your vehicle.

Canned tune: Baseline tune created on a similar vehicle as yours (same mods, engine ect).

Hope that is clear as mud.

So ,I guess the question is how do you know if you have a bad tune?
I hear members reporting good results from some tunes here, 5-star and JDM, etc.

In short, it'll run like shit or does not behave like it should. As I stated before, "I" never noticed my car running lean but it was confirmed on 2 different dyno's by different tuners. Sometimes you'll never notice it, other times you will. I would rather play it safe and have my vehicle on a dyno for a custom tune for my specific vehicle, not one like it.

If you don't mine me asking, what's a custom tune cost c/w a canned tune?

All depends on the tuner. Usually in the 200-400 range from my experience..not including the tuning device. I have extra's (remember what I said about new tunes for every change?), so when I have a new one made, I have the tuner wipe the device.

ISfar and Bo have it right - start at the exhaust and work your way to the intake.
No point in getting an intake without a tune.
The shop that installed my muffler will be putting my AFE CAI in - they automatically do a tune with it. My total cost should be less than $600.

This may be a stupid question but;

Can your car get a virus from a tune? Hate to be driving on the highway and have the truck think that 6 gear is reverse! Can anything go wrong with a tune?

It has been explained very well by others, but honestly you should not perform a mod until you understand the mod itself. Research it and know what you're getting, then let the mods begin.

Just to add to what's already been mentioned. A handheld tuner such as SCT and Superchips, can give you the flexibility of returning your vehicle to a stock tune when you bring it to the dealer for service. It also allows you to load tunes which pertain to the specific gas octane you decide to use in your tank that specific day. In the past, I've had a few handheld tuners, both SCT and Superchips. It's very convenient, but a custom tune will yield you a little more performance. Is it noticeable? Probably not in a Raptor.
