if you need chains in 4x4, the road will usually be closed. since most people dont have awd or 4wd a road closure will come before the level 3 usually. i have not had a problem with having or needing chains, and we have been snowed in the last 4 winters. we got through just fine with our subaru, and we had the road closed on us a couple times. we manage to be on our way up when there is a big storm ........ it has happened 4 years in a row now. that being said, its just a matter of if you want to carry chains or not.

If you need chains, I recommend Z chains. I used them several times on my chevy and my ranger. Of course both were two wheel drive. They work great too.
