More than likely, if you bought the truck here in South Texas the coating on your shocks is an undercoating. I have seen several Raptors in the area that has had this saltwater undercoating sprayed on them that sounds just like you are saying. From the ones that I have seen they just spray that crap everywhere, no masking or anything. It makes a hell of a mess when you are actually wanting to work on your truck as it is on every bolt/nut. It does come off when scraped but it is everywhere from what I have experienced. I don't know how well it holds up to the corrosion but I do know that a little time and patience would have made it much better on the trucks I have seen. From what I have heard is that there are several shops in the area that apply this.
And yes, we should do a beach run and bar run!

Welcome to the place! Post some pics of that beast!

When I get it all cleaned up again, I'll definitely do so!

Sounds about right. That's what I figured it was since it was so thick and unlike in lubricant build up that I've ever seen. I was about to pay a detail shop that also does under carriage coating $300 to have my truck done. Still may do that eventually. I'll pm you my email/phone # as well in case you want to meet up.

I've seen a black raptor on NAS Corpus quite a bit. Just saw a silver with aftermarket bumper black hood graphic as well as a sand colored Raptor on base today. First time I've seen either of those.

Welcome! My truck came from Louisiana and the front was covered in grey what looked like dust but it coated everything up front yet the back is fairly clean. Took SimpleGreen, a roll of paper towels, and a tooth brush to clean and I still didn't get all of it...looking for a better degreaser...
