How many quarts does it really take?

My oil gauge reads above the middle from the factory. Haven't checked the dipstick yet to see where it reads on there. I was just planning on adding 7 quarts.

I just did the first oil change on my 13 and after 7 quarts the dipstick showed it almost a qt low. I put another half a qt in it and got it almost to the full line but was kinda afraid to put any more in it. I know the book says 7 but the dipstick (in mine anyway) wants more. Anyone else have this issue?

I honestly don't believe this. 7 Quarts.

When I change my oil and filter I have to add 7.5 quarts as well to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick. I have '10 with the 6.2. After adding 7 I start the engine to let the oil circulate and shut if off wait 5 min. and recheck. and I will be at a half quart low according to the dip stick.

Well ruger I'm glad you honestly don't believe me.

Only thing I could think is maybe the dipstick is binding somewhere and giving me a false read

7qt flat puts me right at the top indent after cycling the engine and waiting 15 min for the oil to drain back down. Remember, the hash mark area on the stick indicates the compliant range, while the two indents indicate the min and max amounts.

I don't know.. I always buy two handles of Mobil 1 (10 qts) and just dump the first in. Then I dump some of the second in, check it, add as needed, start'er up, let sit for a few, check again, and add if needed.

Thats how I do mine. I remember I just put in 7 and it was in the middle of the gauge after a cycle meaning I could put another half in to make it to the top fill mark line.

I don't think there is ANY real variation in crankcase volume. That kind of gross configuration control idiocy is essentially impossible now. You know what I think it is? Variations in dipstick length or variations in the length of the dipstick tube.

I would be really reluctant to put more than the specified 7 quarts into the crankcase. Overfilling the crankcase is BAD.
