What I'm hoping to do is just leave my headlights on all the time (switch turned to On) but for that to work I'd need them to auto off when the truck is shut down.

I tried it and wound up with a dead battery. Maybe I don't have a setting right? Any thoughts?

Mines a 2010, and I have an auto setting too. But what I need to do is have the headlights on all the time, and let the auto setting control the illumination of the dash; for example if I just tape over the sensor, the headlights turn on but the dash dims too, to the point where I can't see the radio/clock in the daylight.

Ditto on my 2010. I have my switch turned all the way to the right in the auto position. They come on when it gets just so dark. They will come on when I enter the garage and go out when I exit the garage during the day. They will stay on for a few secs when I exit the truck. I think you can set the timing from the personal settings on the dash.
Read your manual. It should tell you.

Yep. DRLs wont work for this though; our nanny state has decided that DRLs aren't bright enough, and that if you don't have your actual headlights on in certain corridors, you'll get slapped with a ticket. Ask me how I know... :wtf:

So right now I'm turning them on and off when I get in and out. But I know I'm gonna forget, and walk out to a dead battery (again) one of these days.

Thanks Mil, but we're talking two different things. Check out my replies.

you dont pay attention to the door ding? i migt be able to figure something out with a relay and your ignition source. it would work with most vehicles, but since this truck has so many onboard computers, im not 100% sure. you can always stop by if you want

LOL yeah I do, but its kinda lame there's no auto off feature to protect the battery. If they can make it ding, they sure as heck can turn them off ;)

Baseball cap on the dash will do it......
Negative Ghost Rider. See why above.

I got used to just turning the headlights on and off

Driving with headlights on has been standard for me since I had an S2000 as my daily driver - every bit of visibility helps when you're that low
